I'm not taking any bets...personally I really hope this isn't the lens coming next week and this was a big coincidence. Still hoping for 500 and 600 f/4 primes.
Owning both the 400 GM and Canon 600 F4 I hope the 200-600 G comes out first. Of course I will sell my Canon and get a Sony 600F4 as soon as it is announced that was the plan when I bought it.
However 600 locks you in to the 600 to 840mm range which is fairly limited and even at that presents problems when your bird or other wildlife is not far enough away not to mention the size and weight and heavier tripod required at these focal lengths.
A 200-600 G will be an amazing addition and very useful to most I can easily get by with 200mm being the shortest FL but allowing me to zoom in between all the way to 600 and beyond with a TC.
I am sure the lens will be stellar maybe not as good as a dedicated 600 F4 GM but at these FL's technique has as much to do with a super image as the lens particularly with a 1.4x.
If it is good enough I may have to rethink my 600F4 or stick with the Canon I like the faster glass for bokeh and faster shutter speeds lower ISO but time will tell.
A 300 2.8 would possibly make me consider selling my 400GM also it is kind of an in-betweener since I seldom shoot sports.

If the Sony 200-600/5.6-6.3 FE is reasonably priced and optically good, it will attract new users to the Sony system as well, and it will give Sony a fairly good range of zooms, from 12-24mm to 200-600mm supertele. There will still be holes to fill, but the range of available focal lengths will be fairly complete, in particular if the 200-600mm takes TCs.
This zoom will give Sony a chance to iron out any potential issues or glitches in the AF system @600mm focal length before introducing a pro 600/4 lens.
I think that more supertele primes can’t be far away.

Not sure if I want/need this lens. 100-400 has me at 560mm f/8. This 600 f/6.3. I think if the lens doesn't need to be stopped down to have excellent IQ then it might be worth it. If it needs f/8 like my Sigma 150-600C did to be tack sharp then it won't be worth it to me for 40mm...likely heavier and of course longer/bulkier lens than my 100-400/1.4TC.
Now if they bring out some super duper A7000 alongside this then I don't really care what the lens is
+1.
I think following Nikon's D500 plus 200-500 approach makes a lot of sense. If Sony managed to produce an equivalent of the Nikon 200-500 in that the lens doesn't need stopping down (while improving on the 200-500's initial acquisiton time), they might be on to something, especially if they follow up with an APSC cam that is geared towards action.

I do wish the focus ring and zoom ring were reversed though. I rarely manually focus, so having the zoom ring closer would be preferable to me personally.
That disappointed me as well. One of the things I like about the 100-400GM over the Canon version is the zoom ring next to the body.

Would seem to me that the A9II announcement would be the place for a 500/4 or 600/4. Still holding out hope for a 300/2.8 but there's been not a sniff of a rumor on it.

I believe the lens (should it be released) will be a system expander if they price it aggressively. I think $2500 or under is aggressive. Under $3k is fair. If they release an a7000 with it the wildlife community will catch fire.
I really think this lens will have several pluses compared to the 100-400 GM. I’ll say it again. I see no zoom lock or adjustment for tension. I also so no gap where a lens barrel would extend. Also, for those who say it’s not long enough to zoom to 600 internally, the pictures show a lens without a front element. When it’s on (fully assembled), I expect it will be longer still.
A few days wait will will hopefully clear some of this up. I think this is a going to be a must own for anyone serious about wildlife in the Sony system. And if it can outshine sigma and tamron options, it will earn converts.

Bah old technology. I’ve told you guys. The future is “cloud photography”. A smartphone app that, based on your current GPS coordinates, would download from the cloud great pics of your surroundings. You won’t even need to take the phone out of your pocket.

Actually it had a nearly infinite number of focus points - you could likely focus wherever you wanted in the viewfinder. Now the accuracy of all those focus points is another topic.

The only real question left is how good is the AF and IQ with a 2xTC for 1200mm f/13 on the A9
A9 is now capable of f/16 after FW 5.0.
Not that is not the only real question left at all.
That means absolutely nothing. If this lens is as sharp or close to the 100-400GM it is a major league hit right out of the box.
If it is very good or hopefully excellent with the 1.4x even more so.
It will not be excellent with the 2x at any aperture the 400GM and 100-400GM are not stunning with the 2x so why would you think a G version would be?
2x converters are more for getting the shot but you can crop to 2x just as easily.
Personally I have never seen a shot of my own that wow'ed me with my 2x. I have seen some pretty nice ones from others with some pp on the 400GM however.
The only reason I even own one versus using my a6500 on crop is maybe for a moon shot because it is never in my bag and never will be.
With either the upcoming A9II or current a7rIII and most certainly the replacement higher MP version of the a7rIII it will be more than enough. You can crop the hell out of them now it will only get more so.
I already have the 400GM and a Canon 600 F4 II so the zoom to me is much more exciting than a 600F4 which gets sporadic use and requires a tripod for the best shots.
I think a lighter 200-600G will be an adorable lens on a good professional monopod with RRS MH-02 head and even better on a tripod but not necessarily require a rock solid pro tripod with a Wimberly gimbal to get the job done which means it will get more use from me.
I am equally fond of the idea of a 300 2.8 for BIF and other sports and would probably sell my 400GM if I had 300 & 420mm covered with a 300 2.8. Use the 200-600 G along with it and either my Canon 600F4 of most likely a Sony 600GM.
Those three lenses and my 1.4x and the upcoming a7000 for specific times will more than have everything covered for me.

Someone has to take those great pics everyone is downloading.

This is fascinating. I now just shoot wildlife with primes (400 GM, 135 GM, 24 GM, and sometimes 85/1.8 and Loxia 21 for landscapes) and am loving it especially because of what I can get done with the larger apertures. I sold my 100-400 and will probably sell my 70-200/2.8 since I’m not using it. Of course you can get a lot of flexibility with the zoom but to me 600 at f6.3 vs 560 at f4 on the 400 GM with 1.4x is not that interesting.

Pretty amusing all the concerned comments about a lens that nobody even knows if they are fake photos of a non-existent lens.
My only concern is that this might be the lens Sony announces this week. Which will put me back on the never ending wait for an A9R, A7000 or 600/4....
