I like the AF speed, image stabilisation and sharpness of the photo but weight is some problem. Also f6.3 is some limiting but this is good deal for 2000€

The 200-600 should ship with a monopod.

T-8 days here in the states IF you got in early enough.
If not maybe 2020
Just teasing. Alex states somewhere plenty of production capability in China; and Sony won't make the same 500PF mistake leaving a string of frustration all over Canada.

Can anybody confirm that 200-600 is shipped WITHOUT lens hood, which is available separately (as an ALC-SH157 item)?

According to BHphoto’s pre-order page, from Fred’s link:

In the Box
Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS Lens
ALC-F95S Front Lens Cap
ALC-R1EM Rear Lens Cap
ALC-SH157 Lens Hood
Lens Strap
Tripod Collar
Lens Case
Limited 1-Year Warranty

So, the ALC-SH157 is included with the lens. That is of course, if we are to believe BHPhoto. Sony usually include the lens hood with the lens.

We are like kids waiting for Christmas. Mine should be in my hand on Aug 3rd or 4th.

You're more confident in your queue placement than I am.
I'm 10th on a list....might not be good enough. All depends on how many Sony assigns to my dealer.

According to my dealer ,if he was not giving me comfort pills, he would ship me the first one he gets, I got a $100 discount when I ordered, in exchange, I had to pay immediately, not when he ships.

There's a Sony 200-600 Flickr Group with several photos trickling in. Overall I'm not impressed with what I see, but it appears many (most?) of the images aren't exactly taken by the most capable of photographers. There are couple shots in the group I really like - the crested grebes and juvenile robin that seem to show what the lens is really capable of.

How can you tell if the camera+lens is using PDAF?

I understand that it may focus more slowly when in CDAF only mode, but PDAF degrades until it stops working. Is there an unambiguous operational way to tell that the camera is no longer using PDAF sensors to drive the lens?

Using an A9+100-400+1.4x I get a green tracking box all the way to f/45 (not 4.5). I find it difficult to believe it is in PDAF mode at f/45 so I think that method no longer works.

I have not done a thorough search but is there any Sony documentation on this? Is the transition from PDAF to CDAF at a set f/# or does it depend on other factors such as the amount of vertical contrast in the subject so that the transition point is variable.
I raise this question here since it came up in this thread, but it is not specific to the 200-600. Maybe I should raise it in a separate thread.

I made a judgement call and canceled my pre-order for the 200-600. Instead I went a bit crazy and picked up a like-new Canon 600mm f4 mkII for a really good price. I can't possibly justify $12k for any lens, but Joshua's work with Sony cameras and the 600mm f4 mkII made me take the plunge. For most people, the 200-600 will be a great choice. At my age I decided to throw all caution to the wind and get the prime. Between the 100-400GM, Sony 1.4TC, and the adapted Canon (on MC-11 with a Canon 1.4TC mkIII) I think I'll be a happy (and poorer) camper.

I am still thinking more in mind with using my 100-400mm GM alone and with the TCs with one of the new cameras (but not initially) including the A7000/Mini A9 after release or the A7rIV, or... Still am trying to sell some gear with no success yet to help to fund a purchase.

Lol! I've got a C-11 telescope I have to lug around and place on a heavy duty mount. This will be "easy" for me! From what I've read, this can be hand held for brief periods and I've got steady arms and hands. Other times the monopod or tripod/gimbal will be used.

Well shucks, I'm right down the road from you and would have sold you my 600 II

I'm going the opposite direction. I bought my 600 II to pair it with a Sony body, however prior to that I was using the Nikon 500mm PF as my primary long lens, and I just can't get used to big, heavy prime again. I may end up going back to the 500 PF, but I'm going to wait to see how the IQ of the 200-600 stacks up against it when in the hands of capable users. I'm willing to sacrifice a little weight and 1/3 stop for the flexibility of a zoom. Thankfully the birds and wildlife won't be getting real active around here for another month or so, so I have a little time to figure this out.

I'm one of those guys that actually prefers a heavier lens and find it easy to handhold. Ask me in a month if I still feel that way

As always, equipment is only a tool. Most of us have to sacrifice some aspect to get what works best for us. In a perfect world the newest 600mm f4 primes from Sony and Canon would cost a fraction of their current price. I've spent the last 15+ years wanting one of these 600mm primes and finally decided life is too short to say "maybe next year". Time will tell if I made the right call. At least for now I'm waiting with great anticipation for the lens to arrive!

first impression vs 100400GM on a9

200600G+1.4x is slightly sharper vs 100400GM+2x (view@100% google doc), but a small adjustment in sharpness on 100400GM+2x will fix it. Probably not worth while if u already own 100400GM+2x.

I was kind of confused to what decision I should make. I had Sigma 100-400 which was sharp but AF was a bit slow @ some times with MC-11. So I decided I would purchase a native lens. First I thought about 100-400GM + 1.4x but changed my mind and placed an order with my local Sony center for 200-600. Still waiting for it to be shipped in a few weeks.

Well, AF will be somewhat slower, but I wanted those 600mm without TC (can add it later if needed), and it appears to be a bit sharper than 100-400 with TC @ 560/600mm. Some early sample photos with 200-600mm people post around on social media are still a bit "mixed feelings" (the lens is new and you have to get used to it as well) but...I hope I will be happy with my purchase.
