am I summarizing correctly here?:

A7rIII - no PDAF with 200-600 + 1.4TC at 600mm

A7IV - yes PDAF with 200-600 + 1.4 TC at 600mm

in the case of the A7IV at 600mm with a 1.4x TC the f stop should be about F9 or or so...and the TC will work with this combo up to and including F11?

Yes, if we go by the assumption that the A7r IV can indeed use the PDAF unto f/11, similar to the A7 III, A6400 and A9 but I haven't seen it documented that way. I am not saying that it wouldn't just but I have not seen it documented.

Up to this point, I have not used my 100-400mm GM plus the 2X TC on my A7r III. Under real life shooting conditions, I used my A9 with that combo. But I tried the 100-400 GM plus 2X TC on the A7r III just now. So, the effective aperture of that combo is f/11 and the A7r III can AF just fine. It can do tracking as well; granted not as well as the A9 but it works just fine. Again, that was at f/11 and not f/9. I assume that the change away from PDAF at f/8 is not that abrupt but more gradually and not like an ON or OFF switch, so to speak. I believe a lot of folks got hung up with the notion that it would simply not AF. It still works fine even at f/11.

Hope this helps clarify that.

Correct. A7R3 will have PDAF with the 1.4TC to about 300mm (420mm) where the lens reportedly switches from f/5.6 to f/6.3 and therefore will switch from f/8 to f/9 with the 1.4TC on.

Also to note, only the A9 will have PDAF with the 2xTC at f/13 as it now does up to f/16.

Less than 2 weeks until the shipments start. Anyone hear if they are on time?

I emailed the dealer that I pre-ordered the 200-600 from, he said Sony has an embargo on the shipping in the U.S. until Aug 1. Seems like shipping in Europe started already. I am wondering if Sony has no inventory of the lens in the U.S. right now, or they are already sitting in warehouses but Sony doesn't want us to have some fun until Aug. Anyway, I don't have anything particular that I would need the 200-600 for in the next two weeks. Would be nice to see some hands-on reviews from other FMers though.

AFAIK, the A7RIII can do PDAF to f/8. So the bare lens at 600mm should do PDAF. But won't once you add either TC.

So the reason I keep asking this is that the compatibility advisory note for the 200-600mm and Sony A7R III is: "Focal plane phase detection AF cannot be used for focal lengths with a maximum aperture value of F9 or above." With the f1.4x teleconverter, it's technically 840mm f8.82 and below f9. https://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/www/cscs/lens_body/?mdl=SEL200600G&area=gwt&lang=en_US

Now this might be wishful thinking but I'm wondering if anyone with the lens has verified that phase detect AF doesn't work if you leave the A7R III at 840mm f8.82?

Maybe they ship in batches, and the Europeans won the lottery this time.

I can confirm that there are some 200-600mm available in Europe, but very few as it seems, still far from general availability.

What is the reason for these different release dates staged by region? We see it all the time on each and every new lens release and on the bodies as well? What the reason or justification? I am wondering if its related to the number of customers in each region and Sony's desire to start small and discover if any issues come up with smaller volumes before they ship to the US market and all hell brakes loose? Anyone have an idea of why this staged release goes on?

No idea what’s the logic behind the different launch dates. Sometimes we get stuff first in the US too.

How can you tell if the camera+lens is using PDAF?

I understand that it may focus more slowly when in CDAF only mode, but PDAF degrades until it stops working. Is there an unambiguous operational way to tell that the camera is no longer using PDAF sensors to drive the lens?

I know he's not everyone's cup of tea, but I appreciate him getting out an using the lens in real-world applications (zoo & baseball game) and providing comparisons to the new 600mm f/4. He also includes a link to some raw files in the description.

I once found him unlistenable and annoying but I've grown to respect him. Unlike many other reviewers he has a pretty impressive portfolio that spans across a wide range of subjects and goes back a long time.

It is wishful thinking....I wouldn't start playing with the decimal points...on the 1/3 stop scale f/9 comes after f/6.3. When Sony quotes values this is the scale they are looking at.

But as has been mentioned, it may not be a hard cut-off of PDAF stopping to work at f/9...it may still function and just not be as reliable?? I hadn't thought about this (nor understand how the system works) until it was mentioned above.

I like the AF speed, image stabilisation and sharpness of the photo but weight is some problem. Also f6.3 is some limiting but this is good deal for 2000€

His 'Fro knows photos'intro is obnoxious and irritating. No way around that. But agreed, once past that he's a good source.

PDAF=green dancing squares in the old system. In the new system the new tracking box.
