They are talking about area and intensity. You can consider, for example, an ideal FF sensor with equal pixel size (therefore more pixels) compared to a smaller crop sensor. For similar f-stop intensity/unit area is the same. A larger sensor receives the same number of photons per unit area and in our example, therefore the same number of photons per pixel. Pixel S/N ratio is the same in that case, but you have a larger total area and higher resolution and when you print the image the same size (as is usually done) each unit area of the larger sensor image will have higher S/N ratio. The larger sensor will have gathered more photons and therefore more information in total.
Doesn't matter if you take a FF sensor instead with equal MP size. Doesn't change the fact that we always get higher S/N ratio per unit area in the final equal sized image.

Steve is correct. By cropping you lose information and the finished print looks noisier because it needs to be magnified more. If you take a photo of the print you can measure the final SNR to confirm. Or you can compare the resampled images prior to printing.
E.g., if you shoot with a 400/2.8 at f/2.8, ISO 1000, and crop the image by 1.5x, and make a print, then repeat the same shot with 600/4 at f/4, ISO 2000, and print that image at the same size, you get similar appearance of noise in the final print. The magnification increases the visual appearance of noise.

Cliff really? You do understand that each of the concepts can be expressed in lots of different types of units? Brightness and time can be expressed in per area units but they don't have to be. For example I can talk about time in seconds, but I can also talk about time in stops of light. Clearly for that formula you wouldn't put them in per area units as it would cancel out the affect of area, or more precisely if you did so you would need to recognize that you are holding area constant in the basic equation. So, yes if you express brightness and time in per area units and in that way hold area constant area doesn't have an effect on the amount of light. Gee, what an insight a constant added to both side of the equation doesn't affect anything.
If you don't express brightness and time in per area units, however, then area most certainly does matter and in that case a larger sensor will have more light hitting it if it is shot at the same aperture and shutter speed than a smaller sensor. That is a simple fact and somehow you just can't seem to recognize it.

Yeah probably. Since they are three slow lenses and theres a heap of overlap between them. I'd probably lose the 100-400 even though I love that lens. I've owned both the 70-300 and the 100-400. I sold the 70-300 for the 100-400 but if I had the scenario where I'd own all three I'd sell the 100-400.

I received an email invite from Sony Pro Support to try both 200-600 and 600 on June 18th at an Event in NYC they are holding. But I am out of the country the only time I think I would ever have to try the 600/4.

I said "the total number of photons (and photo-electrons) in the image", which is the total number of photo-electrons in all the pixels of the sensor. It does not matter how many pixels the sensor may have.
The photo-electrons are distributed among the pixels of the sensor in an image-wise way. The more photo-electrons in the total, the more each pixel gets. The more each pixel gets the lower the shot noise and the higher the signal to noise ratio for each pixel.

Interesting (YMMV) fact...measured my current 800/8 setup of 400DOII/2xTC/MC-11....exactly the same length as the 200-600 (within 3mm). 400DOII bare lens weight is identical to 200-600 so 200-600 will be lighter than my current setup. DO hood is pretty large/long so in shooting position the 200-600 will be shorter. Overall this 200-600 should save me some weight, have much better AF, better OSS/IBIS compared to just IS. It will cost me 1/3 of a stop, unknown on the IQ although I'd assume the Canon might still have the edge and packing length will increase without the option of separating off the 2x and the MC-11.

I have seen these charts elsewhere but don't really know how to interpret them I read someone said the 200-600's MTf charts look as good as the 100-400 GM's. Hope that's the case.

I've got the A7R3 and the A6400, along with the 1.4TC. The A6400 should be a nice "cheap" way to get close to A9 performance on AF and tracking and it will handle the 1.4TC. For static or slow moving shots, I think the A7R3 will be fine. BIF and sports might be a different story.

I’m going to start with just the A7r iii. I can’t justify the a9 and haven’t been able to get excited about the a6400, even though it would probably work nicely.

I also pre ordered. Going to replace my 100400 and 1.4 tc. Going to keep using it with my A7RIII and will probably upgrade when the a9ii comes out

Daniel I think A7Riii will be just fine. I've done enough BIF work to know it is good with herons, osprey, eagles etc.
I'm attempting a Greentoe on the a6400 currently.
