I just bought that combo but haven't used it. Trying to decide if I should return them. Has anyone compared it to the 200-600 or was that not allowed at the Sony event?

I'm not sure, there is a whole list of video reviews on SAR but I haven't had time to watch them and see. Lets hope someone did or does soon.

I'm leaning heavily to returning and pre-ordering the 200-600 based on what I've seen/heard as 600mm f6.3 internal zoom vs 560mm f8 sounds like the better bet even with the additional size and weight

I called The Camera Store this morning, and the owner informed me that I was already on the pre-order list...

He was told he will be able to release the lenses to customers on Friday, August 2.

I wonder if it will be like the Nikon 200-500, where the designers sacrificed a bit of resolution for greater contrast in order to make the results appear sharper? If so, I guess I will end up keeping my 100-400 GM.

Go to 7 minutes, he talks about using a 2x tc with the lens on an a9.

That tells you something!!

I have my preorder in for 2-6 with CameraCanada. I'm not the first on the list. My guy there says he is ordering lots of these.
Was your price $2,598 + tax?

The 200-600 is pretty big...but you can justify it some with the internal zoom, as well as if you choose to use a 1.4 TC since they're so tiny. For hardly any increase in length you get a 280-840mm lens that will autofocus in AF-C on the A9, A7RIII, and A7III (I believe that's correct).

Does the 100-400mm GM have any known advantages that make it a GM over the 200-600mm G? AF speed? Minimum focus? Bokeh?

Better preorder yesterday or you'll probably have to wait 6months to get any of these lenses

The 100-400 obviously has a faster max aperture and it has a shorter minimum focus with higher magnification. We'll see about AF speed and bokeh is probably a matter of taste. Do any of these things mean GM instead of GF? I don't think so. I think that is a marketing decision.

Thanks, but being right isn't the fun part. The fun part is we're all going to be able to get our hands on the world's first 200-600 first party internal zooming lens. Safari time!

The 100-400 GM is a lovely lens. It's compact and light. It makes a fantastic landscape option and a great sideline lens on a shorter field. 100 mm is really useful (see below). The good news is none of that will change with the release of the 200-600. I see these two lenses having very different if complimentary applications. I have no intention of selling my 100-400, but I could see a future where I decide that I only need one. For now I intend to own and use both.

I suspect the most important advantage is that it will have higher resolution, and perhaps better weather-sealing as well.

It weighs nearly 2 pounds less. You can pack it in a carry on or backpack in addition to other lenses. Minimum focus distance is 3.2 feet on the GM and 8 feet on the 200-600. The filter thread on the 200-600 will be required to be at least 95mm, where the 100-400 is 77mm.

I guess we will see which one ends up with better image quality. I think that Sony has quite a confusing branding story now, where the 100-400 is a GM and the 200-600 is a G. Unless the GM has significantly higher resolution and image quality.
