I don't see how a bulky and 3k gram lens is "portable."

It is all relative; the original autofocus Canon 600mm f/4 EF was 6kg in weight. Nikon had 6.3kg manual focus and 5.8kg AF-I versions. 3kg is portable in comparison with those. :-)

I just really want the high rez A7000/Mini A9 (preferably the size of an A7r) with IBIS that will be close to the A9 capabilities so that I can use it with my 100-400mm GM. This will yield an equivalent to 600mm f5.6 naked, 840mm f8 with 1.4X TC, and 1200mm f11 with 2X TC. This will be a portable and small high resolution system that I can use to supplement my A7rIII.

That would be 1200mm @f/11 with a 2x T/C. And as good as the 2x is, that would be amazing.

I can't wait for the YouTuber's reports/videos on Monday or Tuesday.
Have any of those people ever taken a wildlife shot with anything larger than their 70-200?

Yep, 50 reports on how you'll need a tripod cause it's heavy, it's not F2.8, only useable in mid day light, and it
won't work as a selfie lens on their gimbal.

What else, the lack of a zoom lock, or one that maybe only locks at the shortest length, which even way the
zoom ring and the focus ring are, they'll wish it was the other way, the lens will probably take a 95mm
...Show more

Yep, the reviews are going to be fairly meaningless if it is the standard YouTube crowd. Of course PMR will be there with 100% positive review that gets about 10 things wrong. I guess T&C N own the Nikon 600E so maybe they can make some sort of comparison to the 600GM.

600GM reviews don't really matter...we know what it will be. If it is same weight as Canon 600III then I know how that feels in the hand already. It will take both TCs without a problem, the A9 can focus at f/8 like it is child's play for a 1200/8. The length will be the same as all 600/4s come before it. The price really scares me. SAR is saying $14K...that will be close to $20K CDN for me...that means I have a lot of things to sell before then.

The 200-600 reviews will be more interesting as there is a lot unknown about that lens...weight, int/ext zoom, length, IQ, TC use, AF speed, comparison to 100-400/1.4TC etc. I hope some of the reviewers have the 100-400/1.4 to compare and have used adapted 150-600s in the past or even Nikon's 200-500.

Although I am hopeful, I am concerned that noisewise, 600 @ f5.6 won't look any better (or as good) as 560 @ f8 on the full frame.
But, at least in bright light, as you said, we can be at 840 mm with the 1.4tc.

Now, 600 @ f4 with 1.4tc and a good aps-c sounds good, but $14,000!? Guess I'll keep the Canon 600L a while longer!

Hi Joshua,

Well you, Kim, Guy, and I, and some others are getting to be some of the more senior members of the FM community and both weight and cost are or will be becoming more of an issue.

US price of 400GM = $12K
CDN price of 400GM = $16.25K
US price of 600GM = $14K
CDN price of 600GM = ~$19K.....Insanity.....
CDN price with CDN CPS discount of Canon 600III = ~ $15.5K....can I deal with adapted AF to save $3.5K....no I guess not...if you are going to spend that might as well go native....re-sale will be tough for either in the future especially in Canada....this will be a tough decision....

Gear for sale:
Nikon 500 FL

Indeed, Rich, the kids or kid in my case, already moved out long time ago and they already have kids of their own. We paid our dues already and we can splurge and spend money on ourselves. I was out shooting white tail kites and burrowing owls recently and realized more so how much weight did slow me down.

Hi Joshua,

I personally do not have any children, but my wife has a daughter from a previous marriage. I basically support both of us and have basically retired (I wouldn't turn away photo sales though). Money is somewhat tight since I am trying to stay out of our investments and my inheritance. So, I am trying to limit what I am spending.

Everyone has different needs and wants. I would personally take the 400/2.8 over 600/4 any day because there are things that the 400 can do in terms of bokeh and subject isolation that the 600 just can’t. If it’s reach I need, I have ways of getting there through TCs, cropping, etc. that get me close although obviously not as good as the 600 can do. The 400 at 2.8 helps me to try to create unique images whereas a lens that has more reach is only a more zoomed in shot.

I would be more happy with a 300 2.8 or 200 f2.

I understand and fully respect that, Rich.

Sorry for some OT stuff, guys, and now let’s go back to the regularly scheduled program.

600/4 has less DOF than 400/2.8 at same distance so not sure how you get more subject isolation with a 400/2.8 unless you are close/at MFD and the 600 has longer MFD. If you can shoot at the 400's MFD (2.7m) then I guess you really don't need 600 anyways

That said, if I didn't feel the need for 1200mm f/8 (which I do), I would get the 400GM....

A 600/4 at ~3 kg is about the same weight as 500/4 lenses used to be a few years back. Canon and Sony(?) have both done very well here, making 600/4 lenses easier to use at least physically. This could in the longer run make 600/4 lenses more popular, maybe influencing their pricing and that of 500/4 lenses.

If the 200-600mmntakes TCs, that could mean 1200mm f/12.6 or ~f/13. Wonder what the quality would be like?

Probably very questionable. The 2x on the 100-400GM is good but isn't reliable for BIF. This 200-600 is "only" a G lens so I can't see the 2x being a viable option...I think 1.4TC (if it even accepts the TCs) will be the most you would want to push this lens.
