Sometimes you have to rethink your approach to photography. Living in Southern California, there simply isn't a lot of wildlife to go out in search of. However, this thought process has put unnecessary blinders on me. While there isn't a ton of accessible wildlife, there is still quite a bit of variety.
In the past these blinders have boxed me into a corner, and left me focusing completely on the area's vast avian life. It wasn't until a recent trip to Yellowstone where I've started to look at other forms of wildlife seriously. Sure, I'd photograph a coyote or squirrel every once and a while, but I wouldn't make a concerted effort to find something. In the case of the subject below, I didn't really need to search too hard. Its a family that has been in the area for years, but this was my first time shooting them. Let this be a call to others to shoot outside of your comfort zone.
When I read your second sentence, the question “where in CA” popped up immediately but the hope dashed immediately.... Oh, well. Regardless though, you did very well capturing that fox, Mike!
