p.1 #1 · Profoto Magnum with Godox AD200 - very narrow beam

Hi,

I am using the Godox AD200 pro with the bare bulb attachment with ADP profoto adapter on the Magnum and for some reason I am getting a way narrower spot of light that I recall when I used it with B1, B2, or even bare bulb.

The ADP adapter is short so position 4 is almost where the tip of the bulb reaches the bottom bowl of the magnum and position 8 is where the base of the bulb is aligned with the bottom of the magnum. i have tested it in all positions and even pushed the ad200 futher into the magnum.

I was shooting some people at the edge of a dining table and backed the magnum away about 15 feet and had it about 7 feet on a light stand aimed at person at the head of the table. The coverage was pretty narrow for the distance I backed it up. The light hit the people on the center but was about 1/2 stop dark on people around.

I tested the coverage on a wall and had the magnum about 10 feet way with magnum at position 8. I had a one foot hotspot surrounded by gradual fall off.

It's been a while since I used the magnum with the b1/b2/acute 600 barebulb so I will test when I get back home.

My inclination is that the AD200 is not positioned optimally in the reflector----the Magnum reflector itself also not really a reflector with wide dispersal of light. It's magic really comes out up close and/or with a grid. Second guess is that the AD200 is under powered as well.

Take a shot with the AD200 at 1/128th and your camera at, say, ISO 100, f/11 - point the camera into the Magnum as it fires. You can see the spread provided the exposure is right. This should give you a sense of how the bulb is behaving. My guess is the throw of the bulb is too central, given the design of the tube. You’d benefit by using an AD400 or AD600Pro, but of course those come with a price tag :/

I don't own a AD200, but the Godox tube is clear (not frosted) and (I think) open at the top for ventilation. That, and maybe the compact nature of the tube, may affect the reflector's throw pattern.

I am also very confused especially after watching a long Profoto video on the magnum and magnum ocf.

It seems like the old magnum requires big bitube or pro heads. I think those had way bigger diameter heads than small ad 200 bulb. I tested the magnum + ad200 from position 4-8 and could not get the spread to be larger.

I will check the ad200 round head attachment with the magnum ocf as flat head seems to be what the ocf is designed for.

I got some amazing results with the magnum + ad200 over the weekend. Just trying to figure out how to adapt to the differences in bulb size.
