Terrific set of images! The FM'ers produced a bunch of great images of this photogenic and habituated fox family. These are superb!

Oh, my Eric !!!! Such a fantastic set . It was such a pleasure to scroll through. What a smile the kits brought when I got to them. So very nicely done and what a great perspective .

Birdie

Thanks Birdie....they are so photogenic, playful and elicit such emotion....perfect subjects for how I like to shoot

I have to agree with Birdie and Bob! Voted! There are photographers and there are the real photographers! I am unashamedly a HUGE fan of your work, Eric!

Bobby, thank you....I really don't know what to say....to have one of your peers that you also respect so much say such nice things means more than you can ever know

Looks like you had a great outing Eric. Some seem a bit flat, it must be the light you talked about. 3, 6, 7, 10,11, 12, 13 are superb. I love seeing them boxing.

Morris

Thanks Morris....lighting was tough and sometimes the post processing did need to deal with it in a way that may have made certain images look a little flat. We were really limited to very few hours of excellent light before heat shimmer took over.

Fantastic set, Eric! Your experience shows off here as you were in the right position at the right time to anticipate and capture some great interaction among the kits and the vixens. #9 and #13 stand out to me as ones I wish were mine, and #19 as well, just because of how beautiful the black coat looks (imagine being a week earlier and catching that kit with blue eyes!).

Thanks Mitesh....it was so strange lying down and photographing and hearing nothing coming from my left or right when you were there....I figured you were waiting till the exact proper second and then realized you'd already taken about 500 shots with your silent shutter....it was a blessing when I did video....I can't wait to see what you got when the light was just perfect...was really tempted to stay one more evening even as I waited in the ferry line. I do wish we had more opportunities to photograph the black kits....they are really striking and yes, blue eyes would have sent me over the top!

Yes Karl, they can brighten up even the most difficult day and lighten even the sourest mood....one day you will have to join us. Thanks and am glad they put a smile on your face knowing how difficult these days must be

You just proved that it’s not just about the golden light but about how you view any given set up and situation
Big vote

Thanks KD....having golden light, as you will see from Mitesh and Protik makes these guys just glow and brings everything to life....but, without it, they still are fabulous subjects and am thrilled with what I came away with.

Awesome selection of shots from the trip Eric. It was a blast lying on the ground beside you and watching the foxes. Learning from the mammal master Being so used to just shooting birds wide open it was good advice from you to stop it down if I wanted to catch a few of them in focus during the play fighting. I see that worked well in your chase shot to get both in focus that far apart.

Till next year!!

Geoff

Had such a good time! But honestly, there is nothing better than watching you shoot swallows zipping past just for fun. It's like me trying to hit a 90mph fastball....I can't even see them let alone photograph them. And yes, we all learn lessons....like not leaving until you can't see the cars in the distance . That glorious light was just waiting for us....lesson learned for next time....or for Mitesh....the next afternoon.

Well, now about 5K more....it was nice to add some new material even if it wasn't quite as diverse as in prior years....I guess I can have another post or two but with all the FMers that were there I may just call it a day with this one (maybe I'll just add a few to this thread.)

Terrific photos! I wish I knew where to find some kits around here…

Thanks, I wish I didn't have to travel across the country either....I know there must be some relatively locally but their whereabouts are not known to me. I get one walking through my property a few times a year. One night I had kits screaming in my backyard to the point my wife thought it was people....the police came and found the fox kits....the next morning the kits left us a gift on the deck steps...but only that one time.

Thanks Dave...yes it was nice meeting up with a few of the guys...the site is actually getting so crowded that the rumor is they may cordon it off to humans next year...too many getting too close and not showing common sense.

Awesome stuff, Eric. Your posts are always inspiring. I've got a den near me that I've been shooting, but none of the black phase. Is that just a west coast/northern thing? Central Virginia may not have that genetic component at all.

Best,
Cass

Freaking adorable. I love the way her coat blows in the breeze.

So is this family of foxes denned in the middle of a field? And returns year after year, hence the acclimatization with humans?

Thanks Cass....I think the color morphs are fairly regional but not sure if they are mostly a west coast thing....time for me to do some research....interestingly, regardless of the majority color, they have white tail tips

They do den in a prairie as well as at ;east another area that is upland a bit. I don't know that their life span is such that they become habituated but it could be. What I do know is that their main protein source is rabbits and there are hundreds if not thousands....they are all over the place as is their poop.

I am afraid I will not be able to live up to your expectation when I post the images. Everything looks better on the back of the camera. The poses you've captured are very touching.
