Oh Gimp, where art thou? Time to take another look. Most of my work is done with generic PS tools, though I have lately grown lazy and started to rely on the Camera Raw filter too much.

Not exactly a monopoly. Many here touting Capture One, free options, Luminar. But it is a basic fact of economics that the larger your market share the greater the pricing power. Remember Kodak?

It's is silly to claim that consumers always have a choice and to compare gouging and what are called "adhesion contracts" to having a gun held to your head.
Adobe is an ethically challenged company.... to quote one writer.

I just looked at an hour long tutorial on GIMP. It looks like it does way more than I need for free. I am too lazy to learn new software for the little amount of PP work I do. When my version of Elements stops working or becomes dated, it looks like GIMP is an alternative. I know others who have switched to On1. With more photography being done on cellphones and more alternatives for those of us who still do post processing, I would guess Adobe is started to see some erosion in their user base.

Actually Adobe stock has gone up a lot in the last few years. I don't think there is any erosion. They are planning for the future. I had a 4K box installed about 3 weeks ago. The installer told me that youth these days basically have phones in their hands all of the time. I don't think they are as opposed to the cloud like the older generation (old fart like me). Not sure how many even care as it is a normal part of their life.

Well, the 'youth these days' do have an appreciation for the 'cloud' .... but ... they don't own DSLR cameras, they don't shoot RAW, they apply 'filters' to their smartphone images because they are averse to any form of lengthy or in-depth post proceeding ... and ... most of all ... they don't like paying more than a one time $1.99 fee for any apps let alone a monthly stipend from here to eternity. Especially when they can get twice as much cloud storage for the same price elsewhere if they really need it.
While I agree that Adobe is trying to move forward to capture as many young millennials as they can, that task is not going to be a typical marketing venture ... hiding a $10 deal to promote a $20 deal may not have been the wisest move to convince this current generation of young turks to get on board.

Well, my cable TV bill just increased by $20, and it started at over $100 per month. There are dozens of channels, I use only about three of them, and those three often have nothing worth watching. I'm dropping the TV service and will just stream what I want to watch from Netflix and similar services. IMO Adobe offers much more value than these mindless TV shows that have been costing me over $1200 per year!
Before they started renting Photoshop I usually upgraded every cycle, sometimes every other cycle, for around $200 each. Now it has rented for only $120 per year for the past 5 years. I don't want the cost to increase, but if it does it'll still be a helluva deal, IMO. Heck, a good cup of tea made at home each day costs more than $10 per month. I have a tough time thinking of anything I use regularly that costs less.

They like other companies they did and will continue to do split testing. I don't like it but I don't care as long as my plan stays at $9.99.

So did mine. Sports Net went up 50%. Netflix went up about 25%. We got rid of our LAN line on Monday to offset some costs. Had to add $10 and $5 for each iPhone for long distance. Because the LAN is gone I had to get a cell tower transmitter for security monitoring. That was $180. My monitoring went up $10 a month because of the transmitter service. So in about 9 months (payback on transmitter and monitoring) we will save about $25 a month. We though about dropping the LAN for a while now so I just decided to do it.

Your wife is obviously very different from mine, who turns on the most God forsaken of all channels, Bravo, as soon as she walks into the house, and watches whatever garbage they happen to be showing at any given time. If she was actually watching it would be less grating, but most of the time it just plays to an empty room, producing annoying chatter. Ok, she is at least not watching QVC, but it is still aggravating. Unlike you, I view $1200/year plus an infinite shoe collection as small price to pay for peace of mind

I must say I agree at least this time with Imagemaster. I use CS6 as well, however I don't use DNG files. But I am using ON1 for at least right now for my RAW files.
Adobe is really full of itself these days, and the few times I did want help they were pathetic. Plus my CS6 was an upgrade from an even older version.
ON1 isn't too bad so far, although its a bit of a learning curve, but its similar to PS in quite a few ways.
Cable is in the same boat, we stopped Xfinity about a month ago, although we still have to use there internet, which is outrageous as well. Streaming right now and saving a lot of money, and best of all I finally have TCM again! Just gotta love the classics .

I've been checking out On1. Using their sliders, in the same way I might coming from LR, doesn't initialy yield good results. It's taken me a bit of trial and error to duplicate results in On1, but it looks like it should be workable, once I learn they way their adjustments work and become more familiar with their software paradigm.
I tried C1 as well and wasn't a fan, but I think that results from not spending enough time with the software to give it a fair shake.
On1 is supposed to be easier for LR users to make the switch.
I'd love to keep using LR and PS as I'm used to the software and am just starting to feel comfortable with the results, but if the prices increase more than a few dollars, and they strongly hinted that they may, it won't take much to push me over the edge and ditch Adobe.
I know costs increase over time and nothing stays the same, but that also means the people who produce the product have to understand the same about consumer preferences and tolerance for the same kind of changes.
