For one day in 2018 I visited the incredible eruption of Kilauea in the Lower East Rift Zone by air and sea. Starting yesterday, May 3rd, lava reached the surface in the Leilani Estates neighborhood and would continue to erupt there for more than 3 months covering more than 14 square miles of former paradise with thick black rock and destroying many homes, an entire bay, and forging nearly 900 acres of new land including land where the water was once 600 feet deep. It was hard to imagine and incredible to witness for the one day I did near the end of the event.
