@Harold - thanks so much. As for avoiding halos, all I can say is that I tend to under expose these kinds of shots . . this one by a full stop. Not sure if that helped.
As I looked at this, it also seemed to me that the upper 40% or so of the frame could be an effective photograph by itself. That light on the underside of the large branch is lovely, but it is subtle enough that it almost gets lost with the brilliant sunset and so forth in the bottom of the frame.
But frame that section alone (the branches and the darker portion of the sky), and suddenly that lovely light on the bottom of the branch becomes the main subject.
