Have a great time on your trip Joshua. Love the pictures from the Val d'Orcia, one of my favorite photography locations in the World. On our annual trip to Italy this year my Wife and I have decided to go North to the Dolomites, and possibly cross over into Slovenia. We are going in late September into the first two weeks of October. It should be peak season for Fall colors about then.

The 24-105 will be in the bag as always. Such nice IQ and versatile lens. I will also take some wide primes. I don't want to haul around the 100-400, but the Dolomites will often benefit from longer than 105mm. Maybe I will rent a 70-200 f4 to try and save weight. We'll see....

Thank you, Steve! After this trip, we will stay put for a few month; except for some local birding outings, of course. Enjoy your trip to the Dolomites! I have seen wonderful images from that location here on FM.

I used the 100-400mm GM lens at Val d'Orcia a fair amount. The place we are going to in a few days is similar; I was there 14 years ago. I used my Canon lens in the same FL range back then. So, I will have to put up with the weight and bulk of that GM lens then.

These aren't up to the high standards of this thread by any means, but I was impressed with the 24-105 in the field. Picked up tons of small details and rendered pretty nice bokeh at 105/f4!

The pictures are nice enough. This is not a competition. It is about sharing, and enjoying our mutual interests in photography. Happy to hear you are liking your gear.

The 24-105 is what is attached to my camera by default when it is in the bag. It is the perfect lens for walking around, and for a quick grab out of the bag to capture something interesting that pops up.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, I appreciate that. I blame Joshua and others for raising the bar so high, it's a little scary sharing stuff in the same breath as them

Glad you like your 24-105 as well!

Well.....Joshua is kinda cheating, so just put an asterisk by his photos, as he is using 6 pounds of Cine and Art lenses for his portraits with just 2 lenses If we were to make this a competition, we could do it by lens weight, and he most certainly would be (the champ) in the heavyweight division.

Like Steve mentioned, the idea behind this thread is to share our passion for people photography and to get inspired from each other. Please, don't hesitate to share more of your wonderful images, Scott. And yes, that 24-105mm is a superb lens.

but I just used that cine lens on a single session and posted only a single image taken with it.... so far . You are correct about the weight and bulk of those 2 Sigma lenses though. At the same time, I love the tiny FE 55mm lens that I bought together with my first Sony mirrorless, the classic A7r when it first became available. And that will be one of my lenses of choice for my trip to Peru.

Here is an image, one of my favorite images using that lens from some street shooting, or more like market shooting in Myanmar. I paired that lens with the A7s, my second body at that time. The noise of that camera is very much like film grain. BTW, there are a lot of old or older ladies that smoke in Myanmar. When I was there in 2014 that country was not that spoiled yet and most of the time it didn't bother them to have their pictures taken and they just kept on doing what they were doing. However, I understood that tourism spoiled that behavior big time. Although it is okay for you to take their pictures but they would like to get something in return. While I don't mind that in general but the candid or natural element is pretty much gone... I don't like street shooting where people basically just pose for you .

Great shot! Older women in Burma are big fans of their cheroots and betel...always makes for a nice composition. As far as being spoiled by tourism...I wouldn't worry, things change but there are always authentic experiences available to those who look. My first trip to Burma was in 2000, my last in 2003...and I felt a change then when it was still largely a closed country. I can only imagine now. Just means those of us chasing shadow and light have to try a little harder.

Thank you very much, Dave! Since you are using the name Burma instead of Myanmar, we know that you visited that country quite sometime ago.

About a year prior to my trip, I viewed images from a photographer that was there on a regular basis quite a few times. There were several intriguing images in his. I would like to visit those locations; but I was told that we could get images similar to his since there is a hotel or what not there or was that in the background. Or that tree was chopped off. Whatever it was, the progress crept in fast and I understood that there is a movement to limit the level of tourism since the progress spoiled the country at a rate not seen before. I am not sure how and by how much that measure was implemented, if any.

I have been to SE Asia quite a few times. As matter of fact, I was born in one of the countries there. But Myanmar is or at least was the only country, where I enjoy street photography tremendously. While there I had the chance to visit a buddhist monastery for girls. There are tons of monasteries for boys but I understood that for girls there are only few and far in-between throughout the country. In the beginning they were shy and I stayed further away and resorted to my long lens and high shutter speed/ISO since the lighting in the main area was fairly dim. After a while they ignored my presence and I basically started taking wide angle images at their height or even lower. There were approximately 10 to be nuns there and 2-3 or them had handphones that they played with during the break from reading scriptures and praying.

There was no guide there, only a few of us ventured into that monastery on our own. Back then I was the only one using a mirrorless camera and the flip screen came in big in getting some images although Eye-AF was not avaiable back then .

Thank you very much! Yes, I am using LR and Photoshop; plus the Nik Software Plug-ins for Photoshop. Briefly, here is my work flow. I do basic settings in LR since I import my files onto that. This step is really basic since I know that the changes will be baked in from this point on. In general, I do minor edits in the Basic: "white balance", "tone" and "presence". In general, I don't touch the Tone Curve, HSL/Color and Split Toning at this stage but I do the Detail, where I increase the sharpness, etc. moderately. And depending on the situation, I do noise suppression by mostly sliding the mask level up.

Then I edit that file in Photoshop to remove certain highlights and some minor skin imperfections and then I ran my own preset in Nik Software - Color EFX Pro, consisting of 4 filters, glamor glow, tonal contrast, pro contrast and darken/lighten corners. Mostly, I work on the person's face and/or body but I don't edit the background, especially if you are changing certain parameters, such as contrast, color saturation, etc. That will effect the bokeh. I like smoother bokeh and I apply the edits selectively and not globally.

Then I save it back to LR as TIFF, and here I make the final adjustment, mostly colors, color luminance, saturation, and hue/gradation, or what not. I used the brush tool, graduate tool, etc. Here I can go a little bit crazy and no big deal, I can revert everything back to the original setting saved as TIFF.

Hope this helps and feel free to ask any questions,
Joshua

That's by choice. The military junta changed the name to Myanmar in the late 80s and the people involved in the democracy movement (the NLD) and the monks who showed me around asked that I use the term Burma as they did not recognize the legitimacy of the military government and, therefor, the name change. Many were imprisoned, suffered or lost loved ones. In Hsipaw, Sao Oo Kya, the famous 'Mr. Donald' and his wife Fern were also very clear in their preference...I helped by sending them material they requested and heard that, in the early 2000's, Mr. Donald spent time in prison due to the work he did in informing tourists of the reality of life as a minority in Burma under the military. He had a good cover in the Shan Palace but I guess word got out. Regardless, I respect them and their wishes, so Burma it is for me.

That is quite sad. It's a big place and I found it very easy to get off the typical Yangon - Mandalay - Bagan - Inle tourist trail and I hope some of the further afield places have remained off the ol' radar. That said, even in 2000, as one travelled past Hsipaw up the Lashio Road to, well, Lashio, the influence of foreign money and corruption was quite obvious as teak forests were being quite willfully chopped own. I hope rampant development has left some of those things still untouched, though if there was ever a country in need of a functional economy and jobs for enterprising young people, it was Burma.

I loved shooting in monasteries, gorgeous places. I was lucky enough to get a few unsolicited tours and in a particularly large one in Mandalay, the monks were quite proud to show me their calendars, complete with attractive women posing for photos. A far cry from western calendar girls, but they were quite proud of them. I'm pretty sure that doesn't jibe with any of their theories on dependent arising haha.

Regardless, you've got some great shots! Fantastic to see and take me on a walk down memory lane. Mine are largely slides with some negatives and this reminds me I really need to dedicate some time for scanning. Keep posting, I'm really enjoying it.

Dave, thank you and yes, I understand and fully respect your choice of naming the country Burma instead of Myanmar. It is my visit 5 years ago was my first exposure to that country and I realized that I barely scratched the surface. I read your experience there with great interest. Thank you for sharing that here with us.

Here are two images from my visit there. Again, I am amazed how they were able to continue doing whatever they were doing although you approach them with your camera. Even as young as this boy that was taking a bath at a public bath. The girl in the second image was selling postcards while I was taking images in the Old City of Bagan and of course, I bought postcards and then some from her. Yes, it wasn’t a spontaneous capture but she seemingly felt comfortable in front of the camera. That’s one of the reasons I love taking pictures of the folks there.
