I find my copy surprisingly sharp on a 45mp sensor. These classic optics get a new life on the Z7 (albeit with no exif for f-stop)
Someone on legendary Nikon MF thread posted a few pictures clicked with Z 6 and 28 AIS and they were absolutely amazing. Full of detail and "rich" looking colors.
I am surprised how sharp this lens is stopped down on my D850. Wide open there is some glow or bloom or whatever it is. I wonder if anyone has done a comparison with the 28E or the Sigma?

Wow. Great!
Oh the memories.... I started out in 1984 with a FM2 and the earlier 28 f2.8AI was one of my first Nikkors. Kodachrome then fujichrome. I still have my F3 that came later :-) Finally found a near Mint 28 f2.8AIS last year
Another vote for the nikon 28mm f/2.8 ai-s. Purchased new, in 1988. The lens died a few years later, and instead of opting for nikon to repair the 28, A new nikon 24mm f2.8 af/d found its way into my kit. In 2010, I finally decided to have the 28 serviced, and soon the lens was back in my bag. The D800 arrived on the scene in 2012, and the 28mm f/2.8 has since performed very well. My favorite use, since my vision is failing, is to set it up in Hyperfocal at F11 aperture. I set the D800 into manual mode, and set the aperture on the lens to F11. The distance barrel is set almost at infinity (centered on the 1 of the 15' distance marking). Iso is set at variable, and changes so that 100 speed is always realized on the shutter. This setup than becomes my hand held landscape rig, while walking about. In the fall of 2017, I used the above setup to photograph Arches NP. Contrary to the mentioned corner softness at distance, I have found no such issues when used in the above manner described. Everything in the scene, both near and far, are very sharp. This Arches photo illustrates the 28mm f2.8 ai-s on the D800, doing its thing. No Arch here at Arches NP by Michael Spinelli, on Flickr

Yes great memories back in 1982! I use to set my Nikkor 28/2.8 AI on hyper focal distances for street photography and just leave it at f/5.6 or 8.
From what I've seen, the 28 f1.4E is one of the best lenses you can get regardless of focal length. If they made an exact IQ equivalent in Z mount, I would buy it in a heartbeat. I just don't want to fork out for an F mount lens if they end up making it in a Z mount in the next year or so.
In Af side,
I have used Nikon 28mm F1.4E -excellent AF lens
Sony 28mm F2 good AF lens
In mF side, I used
Contax Distagon 28mmF2.8 MMJ -crisp image
Contax G 28mm biogen -sharp image
Leica Elmarit-R 28mm V2 -excellent vivid in detail
Leica Elmarit-M V4 (non.asph) - excellent and similar to Elmarit-R
7Artisan 28mm Excellent MF lens
Nikon 28mm F2.8 AIS - similar to Contax 28mm
Pentax 28mm -impressive such low price, but excellent image
Zeiss 28mm ZF.2 micro-contrast in Zeiss character and sharp lens
Voigtlander 28mm F2.8 SL II N -most impressive character lens even if not so sharp like above excellent lens. Best lens for brilliant foliage photo
So, which MF 28mm would you pick if you had to choose just one?

I think I want to choose Leica Elmarit-R 28mm F2.8 (V2 E55) that is suitable to Sony sensor using adapter. But bit expensive. For budget, I think Contax Distagon 28mm f2.8 MMJ latest. I think 7Artisan 28mm FE+ is known very best manual for budget which is compatible to Sony but designed for Leica. This also compatible to Sony sensor. Best adapter so far FotoDiox V10 that is the most accurate focus confirmation adapter ever. Better than Laitax adapter v7. Sharpest MF lens is native Leica summicron F2, next Elmarit-M asph which is sharper than Elmarit-R in whole range. I wish Voigtlander produce 28mm APO-Lanthar, which would be finest as other APO Lanthar such 50/2 and 65/2 - best ever.
One lens selection in vale: 7Artisan 28mm FE+ F1.4 will be most recommendable using VM adapter.

Be careful, there are two different 28/2.8 AI-S designs and you only want the later one with the 0.2m close focus.
The first production batch of 28/2.8 AI-S had the AI optical formula and shares the mediocre performance of that lens.
The two versions can be readily distinguished by the minimum focus distance, as it's 0.3m on the older design and 0.2m on the newer and better version.

There is one version only of the AI-S 28/2.8, with 8 elements in 8 groups design: http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/lenses.html#28
It has a CRC design, and focuses down to 20 cm (picture here)
The previous version, focusing at 30 cm instead, was AI (not AI-S), with 7 lenses in 7 groups, even if the maximum aperture was marked in orange. The AI version misses the notch above lens locking cut out (picture here).

According to Roland Vink's site, it was the early 28 f2AI that was upgraded (slightly) to AIS, and all K, AI, AIS versions have CRC and 1:7.1, but the AIS is 1:5.4 and slightly closer focus.
Compared to the 28 f2.8AI the 28 f2.8AIS is a different optic entirely: 2 extra elements and CRC, and 1:3.9 ratio, MFD of 0.2m, and slightly shorter focus throw. Over 200 000 were made, and Serial # changed in 2006 starting at 900001
