The C&Cs would depend on what you were trying to achieve. If this is under "performance" lighting or stage lighting, it's a good job and looks great in B&W. It looks like he's on stage. Unfortunately, you see a ton of those images, which doesn't make this portrait stand apart.

If this was a moody, dark portrait, again, good job, however, the eyes are obliterated by the high lighting. If this was a personal portrait, I would have either brought the light down or put another light with a snoot to fill in more detail of the eyes and make it more personal. The overall background, pose, framing, etc. is great and fits the image.

Just my personal opinion. In portraits I've got to see the eyes to connect with the image.

Thanks Larry for taking the time to give an unusually long and thoughtful response - much appreciated.

It is 'in performance' at a small 'jazz club' environment created in a local hotel - so I was constrained by the stage lighting and as a matter of courtesy I will not use flash into the faces of performers.

I entirely agree about the essential need for 'eyes' in portraits but this was intended to convey a mood, an atmosphere and an attitude of concentration and commitment to the music and his role within that.

You are of course correct that this is a well-worn cliche type of image - but this is a local event and perhaps bears such over-repetition ... though whether others will enjoy is another matter - personally I like the 1960's /1970's tradition of jazz photography in B+W and I think my best ones are OK in that genre so that is my excuse to risk boring others - I just hope some others will too.

Genuine appreciation for your interest and comments ... I often wish that more FMers would join in this way - both positively and less so but always, like your comments, constructively !
