I am using a Sony A7lll with a Sony 25-105 f/4 lens. On it I used a B+W circular polarizing filter that I had previously used on my Canon 5D Mark lll with a Canon 24-105 f/4 lens. With the Canon kit I never got any corner vignetting while using that B+W filter. With the Sony setup I do get extreme corner vignetting to the point that it actually blocks light from entering the lens. I’m shooting at f/8 in both scenarios (Canon and Sony).
Can someone explain why this vignetting is occurring with the Sony kit and not the Canon and could someone please recommend a circular polarizing filter that will not exhibit this problem for my Sony.
If you are using LRClassic CC you might want to check whether Lens Corrections is applying an adjustment that results in vignetting. I found that when I used my Sony 12-24, I got a reverse vignette (darker center strip) with light right and left edges in LR using my default import settings. When "enable profile corrections" was set, I got the dark strip. If I manually reduced the amount of vignetting to 35 in the vignetting slider, it disappeared.
Sony lenses have more vignetting than Canon because Sony takes lens correction into account while making them.
My 24-105 when i had it had that problem. Forget about stacking PL and NDs even with slim ones.
I have problems putting CPL plus 1 ND on my RX10. I am sure even 16-35/4 will be similar though haven’t used it yet.
This thread led me to a very interesting/entertaining Lens Rental blog post on the subject. He didn’t test breakthrough but after reading it I will plan on getting a 67mm Marumi when my new 24/1.4 finally arrives
Are the Breakthrough filters better than NiSi? I was looking at getting one of their kits, but for what I need (ND, CPL), I think a few filters and adapter rings would be cheaper.
Those of you who use 1 size NDs for all your lenses (like 77mm) with a step up ring...do you buy the same size CPL also or is it as per lens specific filter size?

Not in mu experience, the opposite in fact.

One down-side in relation to using filters that are substantially larger than the front of the lens (including square filter systems) is the increased likelihood of getting water on the filter when in wet conditions, which is exactly when you are likley to use a polariser
