I am using the most recent version of Photoshop CC on an iMac Pro running Mohave and I am running into an odd issue that has not really been a problem before.
Apparently there is something I have toggled, a keyboard short cut or whatever in that I no longer see the crop handles / lines and most importantly the grid when I go to crop. It is now just a box with grey opacity on the outside of the dim crop line.
I need to both get it back and know exactly what I did to toggle this in order to get back to my preferred workflow.
Top of the screen to the left of the gear shaped tool should be the grid icon. If you click on that you should have "Auto show overlay" checked. Or is this icon not there?

It's checked. I honestly think it is a bug between the latest version of PS CC and my OS, it comes and goes for no reason on all of my machines.
I'm on Windows, but I've frequently had issues with the crop tool not displaying properly. I then right click the crop tool and choose "reset tool". This fixes it for awhile...before too long, it's back to improper display and I have to reset it again.
Similarly (though my crop tool is fully visible), I have that issue with the brush tool. When I'm masking, painting, or using the brush tool at all, the visibility of the circle is gone soon after adjusting the size and edge. That really makes it hard to work.
iMac Mojave, current and recent versions of Photoshop when using the marquee tool to draw out a rectangle I find that the right vertical side of the running ants will often disappear. I can get it back but it's strange.

Not sure if this might help for your issue, but try hitting the caps lock key whenever your brush is missing. If caps lock is ON the brush disappears.
