p.1 #1 · Largest Backpack that will fit under plane seat?

I'm looking for a backpack that will fit "under the seat in front of you." I'll be carrying my A7r iii, 24mm GM, 12-24G, 50mm 1.4, 85mm GM and CV 40. No tripod - I would love to be able to get my BH30 ballhead and platypod in there also. Any suggestions? I walk around with a Think Tank Signature 13, so I just need something to carry my gear on the plane - I have an airport international v3.0 but sometimes actually need to put clothes in a carry on, not my equipment.

I can not choose a travel bag between peak design travel backpack 45l and the Wandrd HEXAD Access Duffel.
My problem is that. I can not see the HEXAD Access Duffel, I must order online one if I would like to see and test...
Maybe both are good.

Hmm, I always go for the larger overhead bins first rather than the smaller space under the seat in front of you. For sure you cannot stretch your leg if you put something big there, making the flight really uncomfortable. I put individual TT pouches, and small bags inside a non-photography regular roller bag for transport. At the destination, I use some of them using the TT belt and carry some of them selectively. I leave some of them in the hotel, either in a safe or just inside my checked in luggage. YMMV.

The f-stop Guru UL with Medium Slope ICU could handle that. You can put the head and Platypod in the upper area. It's a really nice bag and super light.

I purchased a Wandrd Duffel this week at WPPI after getting the chance to play with it in person. Lifetime warranty, well designed, and well built. If you have any questions about it, I’d be happy to help answer them when I get home.

European airlines, at least, have exact guidelines how big the bag "for under the seat" is allowed to be (Xcm x Ycm x Zcm). One of these dimensions is most of the time something around 10cm.

So, whether a backpack fits under the seat cannot be the criterion. You run the danger that you must pay and let them put one piece of baggage into the luggage storage.

Better travel in a way so that the backpack is the larger piece for the overhead department and you have a second bag which is small enough for under the seat. Or (like I do) travel with compact equipment so that a relatively small backpack which safely fits the measurements suffices.

Thanks!

My biggest question:
Wandrd HEXAD Access Duffel have 2 half part: one half (two part) to gear, and other half to clothes, personal items. It sound well for me.
The clothes are closer to back, on the back (as Backpack) and gear thither. It is good if bag is with full load.
But, is it usable with half load, just with my gear? Is it comfortable on the back (as Backpack), if I use just in second (thither) part with my gear.
My plan: the clothes, personal items stay in hotel room, and I go with this bag in the city.

Second question, (but it is subjective)
This bag look well, with good quality on pictures, and in videos.
Is it true in hand?

This is also true of many US Airlines. This is why at least in part, I have been reluctant to try to make a suggestion. I also agree with Joshua in trying to put your larger piece up in the overhead storage compartment and to then place something smaller under the seat in front of you. You may be able to find a camera bag that allows for this along with your clothing, but, it may also be airline specific or you may have to opt for something that is a bit smaller that may offer universal dimensions.

If you want tiny, you could try the LowePro 16L AW. Some of the kit will fit in the camera area in the bottom, some will have to go in the top area. This is the bag I brought to London & Paris from the USA. On that trip, I fit my A7R2, VC15, Loxia 21, 35ZM, 85ZM, a change of clothes, and my tablet in it. It's pretty small. You can buy used on eBay for about $25 USD.

24-70GM
16-35 GM
70-200 F4
Voigt 65 f2
Voigt 40 1.2
Small bag of batteries, triggers, chargers, cords, etc (comes with the bag and very useful)

I will put it this way, many airlines want their carry on item in the overhead compartment; most use 45 dimensional inches for this size which is 22" X 14" X 9". Many US airlines have a size restriction for your Personal Item which is normally placed below the seat in front of you. These are some of the Personal Item sizes by different airlines (which as I have indicated, most want under the seat in front of you): Allegiant: 7" X 15" X 16"; Jet Blue: 17" X 13" X 8"; Frontier: 18" X 14" X 8"; Spirit: 18" 14" X 8"; United: 17" X 10" X 9".

I know I sound paranoid, but if you are going to put your gear in an overhead make sure that it is securable. If you fall asleep on an overseas flight you could wake up to find things missing. I fly with a Pacsafe Camsafe Z15 that carries all of my gear and my iPad, but pack a smaller Pacsafe bag in my checked luggage (filled with socks and undergarments) that I use for the day out after arrival...It fits a camera with one lens mounted, and additional lens or two, and batteries. I have also flown with a Mindshift Trailscape 18L backpack that fits under the seat but is less secure. I am less of a backpack fan than I should be, mainly because I'm fat and a waistband is a no go for me. Also, I have big shoulders and many manufacturers position the shoulder straps too close together at the top/neck.

My perfect solution (for me) would probably be a large sling bag. Kinda wish that ThinkTank would come out with a "Turnstyle 30".

Remember the gear is first packed into two cubes, inside the main gear storage areas. So the gear is tightly packed into cubes, which are then zippered shut. Those cubes get put into the main compartment, and a mesh is zippered over those so the gear is tightly contained, and the cubes held in place; the “clothing” compartment (which is also area for laptop) is completely independent and the back back can surely be used without anything there as you suggest. I’d be happy to post detailed photos if you’d like to see it.

My main business is firearms, so I deal with heavy duty cases for carrying firearms all day long. I think this backpack is well thought out and very well built and comfortable yet very light and versatile.

If there’s a drawback, it’s that it will not hold as much gear as a dedicated roller. This is because the gear storage is restricted to the two cubes. That is also a pro, as you can use the pack to carry other items such as clothing, electronics, etc so it works well as an all-around travel case that will double as a gear pack when shooting as you sugggest.

For me, it was also too shallow for a standing gripped camera, but being a soft case it will still allow you to fir them in there, or I can lay them flat. Haven’t played with the layout yet, as I won’t be home for a couple more days but would be happy to show it when I get it packed.

Perhaps a full review is in order....

Haha, you are paranoid... . If we are talking about cash, then I could see that happen but we are dealing with camera gear of unknown value and not readily visible. First, you put them inside individual pouches/bags, and the whole shebang inside an outer roller bag, then you place the bag in the overhead bin above you. The thief has to be extremely bold to steal anything and has to remain on the plane during the flight. It is still possible for the thief to be that bold to steal individual lenses? Yes! Is that likely to happen? No!

I use a GoRuck GR1 26L and hold the following:

1x Sony A7R3 gripped w/ 24-70
1x Sony A7R3 gripped w/ 70-200
1x Sony flash (the bigger one)
1x Sony 16-35
MacBook Pro 15"
Small misc accessories, dongles, cards, card readers, snacks, sundries

The pack fits perfectly under seats in larger planes and smaller regional jets.

When did we begin talking about roller bags? I thought he was asking about backpacks?
