p.1 #1 · Why so many Canon Pixma Pro 100 printers for sale?

I was scanning Craigslist for a Canon printer (imagePROGRAF 2000) and noticed a whole lot of Pixma Pro 100 printers for sale cheap! What's going on with these?

they are giveaways (or pretty close to it) when you buy certain Canon cameras.

Yea, LOTS of them available between $100-250

They will usually have the UPC sticker cut out of the box (needed to claim rebate)

I use one that I got free with a camera purchase. I'm always amazed to see them just giving these things way. They're a great printer as long as you have room for them and a solid tree stump to set them on. I converted mine over to refill my own Ink and have zero problems with it, even letting it set unused for many months at a time.

They also go on massive sales and rebates. I bought mine new for $50 including several boxes of Canon paper.

right. I think BH currently has them for $59 so who WOULDN’T buy one, take the ink and maybe the head and junk/lowball the carcass?

The ink alone would retail for $120 or so (downwards of 90-100 on ebay)

It's a very nice printer. It uses dye base inks not pigment ink. The colors are beautiful. Low incidence of clogged nozzles.

it’s one of the best printers around to use with 3rd party inexpensive and high quality inks.

You will see a lot after Canon has a rebate on these. I can buy one, claim the rebate, flip it for about $100-$200, and make a profit. You can buy a new printer on craigslist for less than it would normally cost you without a rebate. Kind of a win win situation. Sometimes there are deal where you can bu a new Pro-10 with paper for about $150. If you do this you can print a portfolio for less then I would cost you to outsource then sell the printer for less than the $700 retail price, and person buying it would essentially cover the cost of you printing your portfolio. Turns out to be a win win.

What 3rd party inks would you recommend using?

I love the color management - doesn't seem to require any changes in Lightroom settings to match Canon paper. WYSIWYG. But I'm worried about ink cost and whether the color matching still works with 3rd party inks.

most people go w/ the PrecisionColors inkset. I hear the matching is quite good but of course there is always the custom icc profile route which would certainly address that.

I don’t know if inkjetmall.com (which is in VT as I recall) has a CLI-42 compatible set.

Another vote for Precision! I've been using them with my Pixma and have had great results. Once you get the carts converted for refill the processing is stupid-easy.
