Hi all,
Thought I'd pop in here today and share some studio shots of dancers from the last couple weeks. Also, some pretty cool news. I'll be teaching my first dance photography classes at a photography conference in a couple of months and I plan to expand on that more next year. Hopefully, I can keep you updated on that. My first classes will be April 27 with Out of Chicago photography conference.
Here are some shots of a couple of recent sessions with dancers. Always like to hear which are your faves to see if they match up with mine.
Shockingly good? That's a normal day at the studio for Ron! (lol) They're all excellent, but for some reason I'm really drawn to the high key image with the flaming red hair.
I almost forgot. Congratulations on the teaching gig!
I think I've seen most or all of these on Instagram and all are just stellar. I feel like the pictures overall went up another notch last year after your move to the big studio, with even more variety in the poses and the lighting always feels so purposeful (something I struggle with greatly).
I've always liked 3 and 4 a lot for different reasons.
With 3, it would be really cool with just the silhouette alone and the separation...but the red hair being highlighted (better with just part of her hair highlighted as it is makes it a more powerful image IMHO) gives a great contrast to the background.
With 4, I'm always drawn to that very vibrant red hair and the equally vibrant blue dress. The shape of the dress in the air and the color of the dress makes me imagine that she is gliding in water.
Magnificent work Ron. Your work is just getting better and better. Congratulations on the teaching assignment, your students are lucky people to spend time and learn from you. Belated Happy New Year my friend, long time since we spoke.

Thanks so much! The high key shot with the red hair, that's definitely my favorite. Her studio is using that as a poster for their spring show.

And the conference is Saturday the 27th correct?...Show more →
Thanks so much, Derrick! For me, the red hair was a huge part of what made that shot. I really worked it a lot and wanted to be careful not to go too far. I wanted as much red as possible but I didn't want to lose the contrast.
And the same with 4, the red and the blue and and flow of the dress just made that shot. The challenge of that shot was really just getting the flow of the dress right.
As for the conference, I've put down Saturday the 27th (thanks for catching that) but I did let them know I could do Sunday instead if they needed. I presume the schedule will be out next week since the conference is just like 10 weeks away. I'm setting up another shoot for us with some dancers in downtown Chicago on Sunday (presuming i do the workshop on Saturday).
Depending on what time you get in, maybe you can come check out the studio on Friday night. Looking forward to the weekend!

Dave
Thanks so much, Dave! The flexibility the new space provides me makes a huge difference in what I can do, and it shows.
Beautiful work, I'm going with 1, 3, and 5 as faves. All are excellent but those three speak to me with the lighting. Congrats on the teaching gig! I've shot gymnastics for several years and always have wanted to move into ballet. If you start holding workshops, please let me know, I'm there!
Wow, wow, wow, Ron! These are amazing! I love seeing work that is beyond me. That model with the gorgeous red hair -- just stunning! I love the dynamics of the light and posing. Hard to pick a favorite, but it's #2 for me! Congrats on your classes! I'm sure they will be packed.
#3 is my favorite but I had a hard time not picking #4. If that were my daughter, I think I would enjoy #4 hanging on the wall in my office or living room more. However, #3 seems a little more "fine art" and could hang on anyone's wall. Does that make sense?
Congratulations on the teaching opportunity. If I were a little closer to Chicago I'd sign up. I so admire your work.
1 and 4 for me. I like them because there's a floor, a reference. 2 and 3 to me are just a bit too "in the air." They look amazing too, but personal preference for 1, 4.
