Some friends asked me to do family portraits this weekend, and I always jump on the chance to get portrait experience. My buddy Sam brought his favorite tractor along as a prop. His little sister had her time in the limelight also.

John, folks will say gear isn't the most important thing, and that's definitely true. For me, learning how to light and pose has been the challenge. That said, these were shot with the Fuji GFX 50R and 110mm f/2. It's very nice gear that I own because I choose to spend money on my hobby vs. driving a nice car, not because I need it. Family images shot the same day with a Canon EOS R and 24-70mm lens also made my friends happy.
This was my first time trusting the eye-detect autofocus on both cameras. I've been slow going there, unsure if I could trust it. Both the Canon and Fuji performed wonderfully, nailing focus on the eyes at least 19 out of 20 times.
Thanks Doug, I should have been more specific as I was mostly interested in the lighting setup. I do mostly studio portraits and appreciate the "art" of light too. Thanks.

Hey John,
Thanks for clarifying. I have Elinchrom lights and softboxes. These two were shot with the 36" square as key and a 12"x36" strip overhead and about a foot behind for a hair/accent light. I couldn't tell you the ratios because things were moving fast, and I started adjusting them to taste. I like their triggers that allow you to adjust power from the camera (as I know other brands do also). I think one of my best lighting investments was a couple C-Stands so I have the stability to dangle lights directly overhead. For family shots (not shown here), I use the 53" Octa, which gives a very night light.
