p.1 #1 · Painterly Portraits, continued

Congratulations to dawnkyung for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 2 votes - View Previous Winners

I am still trying to improve my studio shooting and editing of this style. I appreciate the comments and critique on my last post and would be happy to receive more.

My 4 and 3 year old posed for me again, and our babysitter helped out by trying on a million different outfits and posed as well. I have two backgrounds, one grey muslin and one seamless black paper - I only just set up the seamless and hope to shoot some more on it soon!

Thank you for looking.

I am not a good critiquer(?) of portrait photography. But I will comment as an observer. Your backdrop is excellent! The lighting in #1 is focusing too much on the beautiful young woman's face. But not being remotely qualified to comment, this maybe what you wanted and it may be acceptable. The rest look fine to me.

Lighting is very tricky for people and portrait photographers. Hence my reluctance to invest in lights and such. So just take my unrefined comments as a viewer.

My .02 would be to pull the models a little further from the background. For me the background is to busy and would benefit from shallower dof. Also would feather the light so you don’t get as much spill on the grey muslin in the foreground on sitting poses.

Good looking photos! My only real nit (especially on #3) the vignette is on the skin (see her left arm) I am not a fan of darkened arms.

I never really noticed the grain in your last set, but it is bit too strong for my taste in this one. It makes skin look strange. Like the lighting and poses, but have to agree about the encroaching vignette in some of them.

I like #4. It looks classical because of the child's costume, headdress, lighting and background. One small nit: her head is tilted a tad too much in one direction.

Liked the first set better. Need to pull away from that background....its too intrusive. The second shot with the woman looks like she is trying to pull off her head!

Very well done. #2 is my favorite as it seems almost like a Victorian-style portrait.

Really lovely images, but I feel a bit like these are more rushed and exploratory than the set with the mother and daughter. To make my point properly, though, I must say that this stylistic work is at such a refined level that it just may be me.... Inspiring work, regardless.
