It was fantastic...the whole region was covered with snow...made for some risky driving at night but overall great fun.

Sunny this is a neat sequence my friend. I missed this thread from last January and am glad that this popped up for some reason.

There are so many other forms of sound polution including humans that the light sound of a drone at 2,000 feet really does not even register. I've been at remote places where people feel it's ok to listen to music, yell at the top of their lungs, throw a football between themselves etc...

Drones, if used respectively, are really a minor annoyance compared to other forms out there.

You're saying that since various sources of sound pollution exist, adding more is fine? Where does it end? I've been driven out of too many places by drones, music, etc. to appreciate that argument. That's especially true when a photographer is violating the spirit, if not the letter, of the governing laws.

Your immature and self righteous comment is a perfect example of why drone operators have such a bad repuation.

It sounds like all you care about is your own gratification, negative impact to others be damned. This type of selfish attitude is sadly all too common with regards to wild beautiful places these days, whether it be drones, trash, inappropriate off roading, graffiti, etc.

Yes, i am immature. If i was mature like you i'd be using Toxic chemicals to develop film ...
what i gave was a practical solution to a problem you have.

Stop thread crapping and using that 1 line over and over in every drone thread.

Does the sound of camera shutter bother you when you're at a popular spot? I'm sure it does...

Have an awesome day....have some whisky...and cigar..by a fire pit...oh wait..you must hate that too.

1. I did not fly from inside the park. There are big signs posted there. I respect that, MV is my 1-2 visits a year regularly for the past 15 years, so I do know the rules there.
2. Go high...like the max height ...close to 2000 ft...
3. Pan the camera down, take a panorama etc
4. The drone shoots RAW/DNG
5. Take the photo

you do know you can do paid helicopter tours over MV? so tell me how this is different...if I pay it's ok...otherwise it's not?

Don't be narrow-minded, accusatory and judgemental...this conversation would've gone very differently had you messaged
...Show more

1. Just to get the facts straight, you say you were flying at about 2000 feet, and FAA rules set the maximum at 400 feet. So your operation of the drone clearly violated FAA rules.

2. Park regulations don't allow drones, so you went just outside the park boundary and either flew over the park or stayed just outside the park. I'm not sure which since you carefully started that you did not fly from within the park but avoided saying that your drone did not enter the park. Some drone operators have said that flying drones into restricted areas can be technically legal as long as the pilot stays in an unrestricted area and doesn't violate any other FAA regulations, which you apparently did. I do not know if that's true, but it's obviously exploiting a technicality for the sole purpose of circumventing the park regulations. Perhaps not illegal, but highly unethical.

This isn't narrow minded, accusatory or judgemental. Facts are facts.

I have the same question. The 400 foot ceiling is my understanding as well.

Seems the 400 foot ceiling is a guideline not enforced by law under the special rule 101 if you are a hobbyist.

That special rule was repealed ..... so it is not clear right now if it applied to him at the time.

Looking more at the photo, Google Earth, and having been to Monument Valley many times before it became so crowded, it looks like a fairly wide angle view with the camera very close to West Mitten Butte, which is well inside the park, looking south. You can see the East Mitten in the near background and Agathla Peak in the far background, looking toward Kayenta.

The lowest areas around West Mitten Butte are at an elevation of around 5270 feet and the top of the butte is at 6174 feet, making the difference and height of the butte around 900 feet. The drone is above the butte, but not 1000 feet above it. Using the butte for scale and based on the wide perspective of the image I'd guess the drone was around 1200 to 1500 feet above the ground. Based on what's in the bottom of the image and the FOV, the drone can't be more than around 1000 feet away from the butte, which puts it way inside Monument Valley Tribal Park. Yet the OP stated "I did not fly from inside the park. There are big signs posted there. I respect that, MV is my 1-2 visits a year regularly for the past 15 years, so I do know the rules there."

http://www.faa.gov/uas/recreational_fliers/ This says in bold type "Fly your drone at or below 400 feet when in uncontrolled or "Class G" airspace."

Am I wrong about all of this?

Just so some knowledge might come out of this, I found in several online Navajo publications that there are "no drones on Navajo land", even outside of their parks. According to Louise Tsinijinnie, a spokeswoman for the Navajo Parks and Recreation Department, “We do not accept drones for any reason”. It appears that they do not even offer permits for sale, and some of the drone forums say they have issued $500 fines for first offenses outside of their well known parks.

Near Monument Valley the Navajo Nation boundary is immediately south of Mexican Hat and Bluff Utah, more than 20 miles north of Monument Valley. You can find a map of the Navajo Nation boundaries here. Interestingly, this also includes Ship Rock, and I've seen a number of drone videos from there. Regardless, it's clear the Navajo Nation does not want drones. The only references I could find claiming flight over Navajo land is alright come from drone pilots, basically saying they don't own the airspace so do whatever you like regardless of what the Navajo Nation government says. Of course they won't pay your fines if you are caught.
