p.2 #1 · p.2 #1 · Camrote, a new PlayMemories replacement?

I played with this for about 10 minutes on a late 2018 iPad Pro just now and I’ll share my thoughts:

Oh, this looks like a clean, well designed app.
Oh, it connected pretty easily.
Some lag in the display, but it’s not terrible.
Oh, wow, it actually works for video too. Cool.
Hmm...UI has a problem in landscape mode. Some of the buttons are obscured by the settings panel.
Rotate it into portrait, OK seems to be good now.
Looks like I can keep a picture profile on...nice. Lemme just change this one setting...oh crap it disconnected. “Turn off WiFi assist.” Um, OK?
OK that seems to be working again. Cool, I can record video with a PP active. Take that PlayMemories!
Let me try a still photo now.
*Presses shutter button in app*
*Camera takes 57 pictures*
Alright. I think I’ll come back to this after a few bug fixes.

Honestly, if it can pull a RAW file across with wifi, that alone is worth my money. Otherwise you have to use a Lightning SD card adapter.

Now that Lightroom CC can handle RAW files, this would be great for on the go ipad editing.

Too bad this currently doesn't seem to work, I suspect he's putting this behind the IAP paywall. If the price is under $5 I'll give it a shot.

"Honestly, if it can pull a RAW file across with wifi, that alone is worth my money. " Agree. Not sure why Sony doesn't provide RAW transfer with their own mobile app

I downloaded for the same reason and like you and everyone else appears the developer and app is not yet ready for production. For now, I was able to connect to the A9 and take photos but thats it. Everything else is in the App Store pending review status I think for up to 48 hours from yesterday.

This App certainly has promise! I noticed the lag too from A9 to iPhone. Unfortunetly the app is still a beta. Let's see how much better after we can download the additional for-pay features...just not sure I want to pay a fee to be a beta tester.

I learned from Fred recently that RAW transfer is not currently supported in the Sony PlayMem Mobile app. You can however transfer a full sized jpg with plenty of data to edit extensively. But sadly no RAW yet

When hardware (e.g. Arsenal which has some of these functions) costs whatever it costs (US$150 ?) then I'd be very very surprised if the full app came in at less than US$20. I've forgotten what the Sony apps cost me now - maybe US$20-30 for all of those I bought ? Still well worth the money. Which Arsenal isn't so if this can get even most of the way to that .....

Guess I’m a Luddite. Can someone tell me how I can pair up my A9 to this App?

Editing a Sony Jpeg, full size or not, is a certain level of hell I wish to avoid.

I have an A7iii, but assuming it’s generally the same, you go to the menu dealing with airplane mode/Bluetooth and turn on Control with Smartphone and choose connect. Scan the QR code with the app and it should show the device in the app. Then you’ll need to click “connect” next to your device in the app again. That should be all you need.

Yea I was definitely confusing myself in my earlier response. I see them displayed as RAW when I transfer via the USB-C hub to the iPad and then they synch across to my phone via iCloud. So the ability to do that via the app would definitely be nice, even without any of the remote control features.

Ohh dear! No idea why this would be happening, could you possibly send me a picture of the camera whilst your connected? No chance you've managed to switch to continuous shooting mode somehow, or your remote app was still in continuous shooting from a previous session?

To answer a few common concerns:

1. This still feels like a beta: Absolutely correct, unfortunately this isn't my day job developing this app, I work for a digital agency who create apps for the likes of the American Red Cross. This means I can't afford to splash out on every model of Sony Camera to test. Whilst I did have beta testers testing on various models which I don't own (I have an a7ii) nothing compares to me being able to debug issues in-person and so some things have slipped through the net! rest assured, I will be updating this app regularly with improvements to stability and behaviour.

2. In App Purchases aren't working: Again, correct... Unfortunately (Completely undocumented by Apple) it takes a while for In app Purchase info to propagate to their servers, and until that point they won't work. They quote a max of 48 hours for this, so should be available soon!

3. RAW transfer: Yes, RAW transfer is available, FOR FREE! You need to make sure the camera is setup to shoot in RAW by opening the menu whilst in the remote control app and configuring the still size.

4. Transfer isn't working on a7iii e.t.c.: Unfortunately this is a side-effect of me not having a budget for test devices. I am collaborating with some testers to have a fix out for this over the coming week!

Thanks all, and hope you enjoy using the app!

Yes, PlayMemories does not support RAW transferring.

This app could be worth it for the RAW transferring alone! One could transfer and edit RAW files using Lightroom Mobile (or any other RAW post-processing app) before sharing them.

Editing RAWs is way better than editing JPEGs even if the output is a web-resized jpeg image.

Indeed, I learned within a week just how much extra detail Sony RAWs have vs the JPGs. It’s definitely obvious, even on something like an Instagram post, to my eye at least.

Neat project, I am looking forward to what becomes of it.

Two bug reports which were already filed but without the concrete setup:
Trying to import images:

As Fred I see the defining feature (for now) in the ability to transfer Raw files to the iOS device. If you get that to reliably work you can be certain to get a shoutout from my blog.
