Third times the charm.

I put this offer through 2 other times, nothing. For some reason, they took it today.
The tc must be going on sale for $450 tomorrow.

Hey Andy.
I don't have a a7RIII, I have the a7III.
I actually have the a6300 also.
Do you have any info on that?

So, I gave a second look to the elements on my TC and lens, and they looked a bit dirty (lens was used and TC was an open box).
Gave them a quick cleaning, and images seem sharper, in good light (even HH), at 800mm on the A7RIII.

Have an Arca-Swiss ball head coming so hope to play with the combo on the tripod, weather permitting, later in the week.

Let us know how you make out with th A7III.

Will do.

I'm getting it through Greentoe. If there are no hiccups, I'll probably have it sometime next week.
If hiccups occur, like they have on past orders, maybe a couple of weeks.

As the world turns.

Contacted the camera store that accepted the Greentoe offer today cause I hadn't heard from them with info about my tc.

I was told that when they accepted the offer, their computer showed that they had them in stock, but the computer was wrong.
So I was asked if I wanted to wait another week for more to come in, or cancel the order.
I feel that I got a pretty good deal, so I told them I'd wait.
Lets see what happens next week.

I will say that this store is the same one that fulled my pre order for the a7III when it came out, so I'm hoping this
is what they said, just a simple mistake that will be fixed next week.
Time will tell.

Update:

The tc has shipped.
The tracking says it should be here on Thursday.

Friday looks to be cloudy but Saturday looks to be sunny.
I should be able to try it out in both conditions.

I received the 2x at sundown today, so any real testing will happen in the next few days.

Just trying it in the house, at crazy iso's of 8000 - 51,200.

1/60, f11, iso 8000, at 800MM near the min focal distance.
handheld, resized only.

In better light, this should work pretty good.
I'll have to check the frames per second when I go shooting.

So the big day, winner or loser.
At this point, lets say I'm even.

I and the equipment had moments of brilliance today.
We also had a lot of agonies of defeat.

Temps were pretty good today, but it almost seemed like I had to let the equipment acclimate to the weather before I could get a clear shot.
Flights shots were 80% bad. I need to check and maybe change some settings that I feel should help.
I was also trying LOCK ON focusing for the first time ever, probably not a wise choice either.

Subjects not moving, fantastic.
Subjects in flight, first shot good, then 3 or 4 bad ones, then another good one or two, then back to bad.
I think some of that are the settings, some of it's me, and some is maybe pushing the equipment past what it can do.

on to some shots.
Perfect, no, but I could live with this. 3rd or 4th shot of the series. 2 before and the 2 after were blurred.

same swan coming in for the landing (same series) I'd take this all day.

This is the a7III, 100-400, 2x tc, and 1.5 clear zoom. (digital zoom)

That's it for now.
Maybe get out some more soon, change a few settings and see what happens.

If you made it this far, Congrat's.

Looks like it will work for you as you understand the limits. I will say that even on the A9, BIF with that combo give me too many misses than I'd like...probably better than the A7III but still. More static stuff is great. The optics are there, it is just focusing with f/11 light that is always going to be a challenge. The fact that the A73 and A9 can even do it somewhat is pretty impressive.

I've had very poor success with Lock-on AF modes on the A9. Much prefer Wide or Zone for BIF.

Why, when I'm trying new equipment, did I try Lock-on modes?

I normally use the same as you for flight shots, but for some reason I didn't today.
Next time out I'll go back to the basics. I think I can do better than I did today.

I do agree that just having the chance to have to hit focus at f11 is a huge step up.

Nice Dave!

I’m sure the hit rate will improve. If you come out with “enough” shots that represent what you wanted to capture for the outing, I don’t think the number of misses matter as much.

I have a new 100-400 coming next week. Old one had what I initially thought was a dust spec under the front element, but was a chip and scratch.

@davev Any update or conclusion on this combo? Looks like it can work, I am more curious if you found it too frustrating in the end. I am thinking about getting the 2x for my 100-400 and a7iii, wondering if I should try the 1.4x instead.

This was back awhile, and I've pretty much moved on from it.

The 1.4 for sure works better than the 2x tc, no matter what camera snd lens you're using it with.
I was able to use the 2x on static subjects, but I now have other ways to do this.

I now own an a7RIII with more pixels, and an a6400 for getting in a bit closer.
In the last couple of months, I've bought a 200-600 also, and the 1.4 works very well on that.
Seeing as I didn't really comment after my first work out with the combo, I must not have been pleased with
what I was getting, and there's the reason for this other equipment.

My suggestion, get the 1.4. It works better with any camera, or any lens that can use it.

I had that combo (A7iii + 100-400mm + 2x) and didn't really like the results in terms of sharpness and especially contrast. AF is okay, but then I don't do BIF much. I ended up selling 2x and getting an A7Riii instead so I can crop.

In one of Mark Galer's videos he shows an extract from Sony documentation, (A7III and A7RIII manuals I believe),
that states:
"When the F-value is greater than F8 in [continuous shooting: Hi +], [Continuous Shooting:Hi] or [Continuous Shooting: mid] mode the focus is locked to the setting in the first shot.

The 100-400 gives F/8 with 1.4X TC and with the 2X TC, F/9, so the AF will be as described above with A7III and A7RIII.
The 200-600 with 1.4X TC gives F/9 and with 2X TC gives F/13.

I have pretty well come to the conclusion that for my use with my A7RIII with my 200-600 using either TC is really a good light and tripod situation for relatively static subjects. You can actually see the AF box pulse slightly as it searches back and forth to attain focus. So I suppose any change in distance during a burst of shots may well give some OOF shots, (assuming the change of distance exceeds the DOF at the time).

Edited to add:
Just for your info, the documentation also mentions:
The subject is not displayed in real-time on the monitor or viewfinder when shooting in [Continuous shooting: Hi +] mode.
