p.1 #1 · 100-400 with 2x tc on a7III, does it work well?

I've seen tons of shots with this lens and tc combo being used on an a9, nothing about it on an a7III.

The eagle season in coming up quickly in my neck of the woods, and I'd like to have a bit more reach.
I have the 100-400 and have used it a lot with the Sony 1.4 tc, and feel that its a fantastic combo.

So if you've used this set up, could you let me know how well it works, is the IQ still good, and do you lose
any functions of the AF systems or speed of the frames per second.

Thanks in advance.

I have the 2x on A7III. The image is a bit softer but still very good. No problem with focusing at F11 .It is still quick and accurate. Having said that, I will probably get the 1.4 too.

I've been trying Greentoe, but the best counter offer I can get is $519.

If I can get it for $500 new, I'll pop for it, but so far, it's not happening.

Focusing at f/11 is one issue, and your experience is that the A7III seems to be OK. The other is whether it can track moving objects at f/11. My A9 can track with the 2X at f/11 but my A7R3 cannot except at the LO frame rate and even there it is pretty poor. It is easy to check by setting up at f/11, AFC and then hold the shutter release while you walk toward and object that you want to keep in focus. If it keeps the focus tack sharp you pass, otherwise not. I expect that the A7III should be better than the A7R3 but not as good as the A9. It would be interesting to hear from someone who has tested AF tracking.

there is a 10% off photo equipment on Ebay until midnite Saturday night (ends 12:01am Sunday morning 16 December).

One can get the 1.4x TC for $533 less 10% from Hong Kong - brand new...

I did not price out the 2x TC but it should be similar in price.

Thanks for the info, but I think I'd rather buy in the US in case I would need to return it for some reason.

Sorry, A6500 not the A7III, plus I need more light.

AF was absolutely dismal, but no surprise at f11 on a dull day.

That's what I'm worried about, having the reach, but not being able to get the shot.

Should be better on A7III and A9, as well as with better light. Maybe some day I will compare IQ with 2x compared to upsizing from 1.4x. That won't be for a while though.

In the meantime, I may use it for distant still shots in good light, and wait for rumored A7000.

I did that a while back when I was evaluating several different options. I felt the 1.4 upsized in Photoshop was sharper, but I may have missed something. I used a tripod and the subject was birds about 20' away. It was not a super bright day, so noise levels could have been a factor.
The one thing I didn't think about when I returned the 2x, is that the larger subject size it gives the sensors for small subjects may actually allow the sensor to focus better in some cases. In other words, the face of a small bird would be big enough to focus on, instead of the branches it is peering through.

Would love to hear about other's results.

Another thing about having a larger sized subject is the metering.
The metering should be better for your subject if more of your subject is filling the frame.

You can even do this if you kick the camera into crop mode.
By narrowing the FOV, you may be eliminating some dark or light areas that could alter your metering.

I have, and use the 1.4 tc with pretty much every shot I take with my 100-400.
I can't see any IQ fall off for using it.
Trying to get more length, I've been trying to add Clear Zoom also.
The results are very mixed, mostly bad.

Using the digital zoom, you lose the all the focus zones other than wide.
A bird in the tree is probably not going to focus on the bird.
It will catch some small branch, or leaf and focus on that.

Mr Knapp, do you have any of the photos that you took when you owned the 2X tc?
Another question, how was the focusing. Did it snap to focus like it does with the 1.4, and did it end up hunting to acquire focus.

With the 2x TC in better light, AF was much improved, with no hunting.

Nice shots.

I know I'm being a pain, but did you get any using the a7III?

Tony, these shots look remarkably clean at ISO6400, especially for a cropped sensor.

The a7iii focuses faster than the a6500, so I would think it's safe to assume that in good light at f11 on the a7iii you should be ok.
