p.1 #1 · Nikon Z7 + Ninja V + Crane 3

Stuck at home with a cold, what better way to kill time with few gear shots.

This is the Nikon Z7 with the 24-70 S mounted on the recently released Crane 3 LAB and the Atomos Ninja V.

It works a dream except for the added weight of all the gear and a bit of a nightmare to stabilize the camera with the Ninja V mounted on top. Plan an hour to get it right and then leave it there! Bye Bye Ronin-S.

The other issues I faced is that I can either connect the Z7 to the Ninja V HDMI or connect the Crane 3 to the HDMI as only one HDMI slot is available on the Z7. Whichever way, you end up with lots of cables.
I do not use the WiFi with my mobile but only the Ninja V.
The WiFi is more practical with the Weebill LAB and the XT3

The Ninja V works great and is simple to use and shoot 4:2:2 - 10 bits - Full Frame.
Obviously you need a well equipped post station to grade and edit all the material and know your grading.

The Crane 3 is very practical and does all movements required at the touch of a button.

I have not tried the Ninja V on my Fuji XT3 and it is mounted on a very light and almost pocketable Weebill LAB and is a must for proper video shooting.

Now back to my tissues box........

That does not look fun to balance, I suspect the center of gravity is near the ballhead. The Ronin-S is nice as you could get a smallrig attachment and move the monitor off the body

Actually, you will have the same issue with the Ronin as the HDMI port will be used by the Ninja V.

In case the camera is not using the Ninja V mounted on the Flash shoe, then it is the usual balancing and as a matter of fact the Crane 3 is easier to balance than the Ronin.

Nice set up you have there, the Crane 3 looks so different to the others stabilization systems.

What do you like most of the Crane 3 compared to the Ronin S?

Thank you for posting it, I order the Z6 for some video projects I have and this post is very helpful to plan my set up.

Marcelo

P.D. I hope you get better with that cold.

In case you are not going to use heavy lenses, then I would recommend the Weebill instead of the Crane 3 as it is more practical and fits flat in your bag. Both the Crane 3 and Weebill have a similar holding in the sense that you unscrew the Weebill feet and mount it on top if the battery holder which makes it same as the Crane 3.

The Crane 3 is now much easier to maneuver as you close the feet which becomes a column and you hold with your left hand while the right hand holds the handle. This the Ronin cannot do. All other shortcomings of the Ronin S vs The Crane 2 has now been surpassed with the Crane 3.

The long and short is for a small light rig nothing beats the Weebill and for pro work and maneuverability, The Crane 3 has everything plus the cherry on the cake which is the new holding stance.

The Weebill with an XT3 or EOS R or Sony A7 RIII is easily a one small bag set up (No heavy or long lenses) Travel - Street - Tight events..... and you are off to the finish line.

This is not to denigrate the Ronin S which of course is coming from a long lineage of products.

To conclude, I would recommend to get the Weebill for the Z6 unless you need a more gear load.
Both Crane 3 and Weebill can be controlled from your mobile and both have Follow Focus.

Have a look at Jason Vong video:

Thank you for your wishes. I am popping medicine like candy as I have an important shoot tomorrow followed by grueling 4 days of the same.

I have been looking into similar setups, my kids are getting much more into YouTube and other videos and I’ve been thinking of something we could all use. What would you say is the “limit” for the Weebill?

Oh my god - I am having some serious gear envy. I don't do enough video to justify the gimbal and Atomos, but damn those things are purdy

The Fuji XT3 is perfect on the Weebill.

The Z7 is just the limit with the 24/70 S lens.

Anything over needs the Crane 3 LAB.

It depends on your shooting and your camera volume and weight.

Thank you Almass, so a Z6 with anything bigger than the 24-70 kit would require the Crane 3, the Crane is what I was leaning toward anyway but it was the Crane 2 I had been looking at, seems like the 3 has some even better features. Do you think the Crane 3 could handle a D750 with 24-120 or would that be pushing the limits?

Should have watched the video before I asked the question, the Weebill can handle up to 6.6 lbs while the Crane 3 LAB can handle 10.14 lbs, so both could handle the D750 with 24-70 and similar size lenses as the pair comes out at just over 3lbs, but I suppose the question isn't about the weight per se but more about the "ease of use" with each system, the Crane 3 LAB offering better stabilization with how it's setup for the grip points?

Also, for someone who's never played with these types of gimbal devices, are there some good tutorial videos available and which ones would you recommend, thanks again.

- I don't know if the Weebill can handle the 24-120 as it would be an issue of front balancing and the Weebill does not have a long back slide to balance long lenses.

- There are no real good tutorial videos for the Weebill and Crane 3 as they are brand new.

@Almass,

I have the X-T3 and Weebill Lab. I noticed that the Crane 3 has an HDMI port on it. Does it pass video from the X-T3 wirelessly to the ZY Play app? I have not been able to get video from the X-T3 to pass to the ZY Play app.

Also -- how does the weight of the Crane 3 compare to the Weebill Lab? I may exchange the Weebill for the Crane 3, but I really do like the compactness of the Weebill.

1- Yes, both do WiFi,

2- The Crane 3 is heavier than the Weebill and more addressed to heavier cameras and lenses.

You do not need a Crane 3 for an XT3.

Thanks for the response. Have you been able to pass live video from XT3 to your phone using the Weebill? I've tried but have only been able to control pan/tilt/rotation of the Weebill but no video appears on iPhone.

No. I did not try it yet. I will when I have some down time.

I went yesterday yo B&H and compared the Ronin S, Moza Air 2 and the Weebill Lab, the last one is so small, light and convenient to travel or just carry it with my camera and lenses while the Ronin and Moza are huge and heavy.

I need to buy it this week and it is so hard to make a decision with so many options specially considering the price of the Weebill and Moza are the same.

I am planning to use it with the 24-70mm f4 so I guess the Weebill lab is the best option.

Mounting anything that high up on the camera on a gimbal will make your life super difficult.

Most people mount the monitor (or any mics or lights) to the base of the gimbal (that isn't stabilized) as it allows for better balancing/performance, and more convenient viewing angles

This is a phone as a monitor, but should give you the right idea:

The Weebill is very practical as a light piece of gear and is very versatile.

However it cannot accommodate lenses heavier and longer than the 24/70 f4 S. The new 24/70 f2.8 S will not make it but you are OK with the 35mm and 50mm. The 24/70 S is the maximum size for the Weebill.

Let us know how you get along.

I'm getting acceptable results with the Z6, Weebill and 24-70mm f4s—at the 24mm focal length. Keep in mind that length won't permit much more beyond the 24mm focal length with this lens.

I also tried to use the Tamron 17-35mm OSD + FTZ and the length wouldn't permit usage with this combination.

Here's some results using the Z6, Weebill, 24-70mm and 50mm.

Thank you so much for the feedback and the video. I tried today the Z6 with the 24-70mm f4 S and definitely is the lens to go for video projects. I still deciding between the Weebill and the Moza Air 2.
