This was probably one of the most exciting things I have done over the years on my trips to Latin American countries. I hiked on a rainy morning on a pretty slippery steep mountainside to get to this nest of an OHE in Brazil recently. These are large shy birds of prey and raise just 1 chick during their nesting season. I hope you enjoy the images as much as i enjoyed making them.
I also shot a few landscape images to show you all how beautiful it was on this trek. The chick is almost 3 months old and started fledging. In a few months, it will leave the nest as a sub adult and I will be back next year to track it again!
I love these types of adventures and as you say they can be so rewarding. The best thing about this nest is you were able to get some decent images despite how high it was. Even isolating the chick with good background in the last image.
I had word of a Harpy nest from a lady whom I stayed with in Ecuador (not sure what country the nest was in, might have been Brazil or Peru) and her husband ran tours but I was never able to make the trip. That also would have been a similar type of adventure but no idea how photogenic the nest area would have been.

Major score! Congratulations.
I pointed out one to our guide in CR. He said it is a rare rare event.
These are difficult birds to see, I have spent years to get a shot like this and so glad i did! Ill be back next year to see if they nest again now that i know the spot!

Thanks Geoff. I cant talk about my tours on this forum as a guideline but yes there are some reliable nests both in Ecuador and Panama that I am well aware of (Harpy). I might be in Ecuador on Feb 19 for that.
