Amazing....
Caveat....I updated from FW versions that weren't the latest ones before these newest ones....A9 was on 3.0 or 3.01 and MC-11 was on 1.13 or 1.15 (should have paid more attention to the previous version). So maybe some of my excitement was already available before this very latest update.
I updated A9 first and then went and tested AF with MC-11, Canon 400DOII with 1.4TCIII....I did a bunch of near to far, far to near, Wide AF tracking of a subject for a baseline. Then I took the plunge and updated the MC-11 as there has been a few reports saying it made things worse but I decided to gamble and get all my FW up to date.
Went immediately back outside and ran the exact same tests....biggest difference was going from a far to near target which is always the biggest issue with adapted superteles in my experience. The new MC-11 update made a noticeable difference where moving from a far tree to an almost MFD subject in how fast it got focus and it didn't do the normal hunt. It still isn't as fast as my 100-400GM but man is it close now....maybe I can save some money and buy a Canon 400/2.8II instead of the Sony
So all I can say is that the combination of the most current FW of A9 and MC-11 works really, really well and I don't think anyone should be worried about updating both as a number of us were when discussing it a few weeks ago.

I experienced the same thing about 10 days ago right after the FW upgrade . It is basically native.... well, almost.
You meant to say you would buy a Canon 400mm f/2.8 Mark III, and not the Mark II, right, Geoff ?
Well....no.....because then it would cost me just as much But I guess I would be more future proof for a future 7D3 that is so amazing I can't resist....but that will never happen so I will continue to aim for the Sony once I amass the cash to get it....more selling of gear must happen first and I can't decide what to sell
Updated the MC-11 to complete latest yesterday, same with a9.
All is good. My 400DOii seems as close to native as could be now without
saying Sony on it, I could easily say this too 'It is basically native.... well, almost.'
Just to add I found sigma 1.4 tc and 2x tc are significantly better with my canon ef 500/4is plus mc-11 in terms of af response (compared with canon’s tcs) with a9 after the firmware updates.

Yup, that’s Alex told me, too and I believe he started a thread regarding that mentioned that in a thread. I found the thread he started: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1566281/0?keyword=x#14631075.
I remember now, that’s why I tried sigma tcs, thanks to Alex.
Alex is the one who turned me onto the a9+Commlite+1.4TCiii+Nikkor 300PF combo of which I will be eternally thankful.
300mm prime
400mm prime.
All left for me is Commlite to get up to speed on the Nikkor 500mm PF.
An old man (me) who can't suffer F2.8 anymore is very happy these days.

I barely remember the old Petkal, maybe before my time.
The baton has been passed on. Not sure what Alex does for a living, but wish I could afford all these gears.
Maybe I need to grab an MC-11, I have the 150-600C and was going to sell it to help fund the 500 f/5.6 PF for my D500, but I might experiment since you guys are getting great results even with Canon lenses, as I also have a 500 f/4L II.

PP double check with Arbitrage. I'm not as picky as he is for performance.
Considering I started this thread with the word "amazing" I think I've made my opinion clear
But just to be sure I may ask my friend to quickly borrow his 500II today and see if there is anything different on the A9/MC-11 versus the 400DOII......stay tuned....he may not let me play with his fairly new toy.....

Have you tried the A9/MC-11 updates with your 600II?

I believe, you are right, Vic! Oh, well.
At this rate of improvement, Canon lenses may be back in demand, especially those that do not have any Sony direct counterpart....yet, like the 600mm f/4 lens.

arbitrage are we still in a hold pattern for a Commlite update and the Nikon 500 PF?
my a9 and 300PF are outstanding
perhaps Sony will surprise us soon
The a9+300PF was the amazing combo I was speaking of. I'd add the a9+400DOii as 98% amazing.
Problem is the 400DOii is now getting heavy for me I had to use a monopod the other day

True Joshua. I was even pricing used EOS 400/2.8 but same boat at the Sony, I can't manage the darn weight.

Yes, I sold it about a month ago...moving on...a friend of mine has the 600III on order and hoping to see it arrive in Jan. Maybe I'll go and give that a whirl when he gets it
