p.16 #1 · Voigtlander 21mm f/3.5 Color Skopar Review
OK, on a tablet here, but this one strikes me as an quite extraordinary pictorial lens. CV color (strong sat yet well-balanced), it does not shout its sharpness at the viewer, and exquisite focus fade - in a f3.5 lens. This last is very surprising. But, it gives up just a half stop over the same FL Loxia and other Distagons, but CV are masters at OOF.
Not least, consider the responses to new Sony 24/1.4 - it's so light! Well, it is for a fast 24mm. But people seem to be using it also for non-wide aperture imagery. It's 445 grams, and this tiny gem is...230 grams. Don't let go of it, it might float away. One of these on an a7r comes in under 700 grams, much the same as a 3 series body alone, packs a big 36mp punch. Thanks for the lovely shots, imagesfromobjects. Very stylish.

So, were you able to get a good copy John?

I didn't find that to be an issue, but I'm also using a 1st Gen a7S with smaller hand grip than the newer models. There's a thin ribbed ring close to the mount. Or you can just use the focus ring turned to either hard stop. I have big hands, too. No prob.

While the lens looks to be amazing, not a fan of the mounting, barely anything to hold on to

I would say it's better than the first, which had pretty bad sharpness at the "borders" of the frame (left right frame edges in landscape mode) which matter the most for me. Extreme corners don't get 50% viewing sharp until f/8. It may be a bit decentered while the first copy was same IQ in all 4 corners even wide open.
Weather and work schedule have conspired against me to really get it out for a full workout. I just don't get as sharp of corners as guy gets on the wall, but his images are pretty close and I suspect field curvature is at play.
I need to directly compare this 2nd copy against my 21Lox and my 20/2.8 AIS on my A7RIII.

Yea for the 21 I think I’m about 30 ft away on the wall. It’s funny most times infinity matches the wall identically but I had a few be slightly different. I really need to get out. I was going to go to Flagstaff today but that got cancelled. I want some fall colors. Maybe mid week
Like to compare this 21 to the Sony as well in real world. I’m keeping both regardless

I am considering to keep both but i'm not sure if it's wise thing to do. My reasons are that sony 24mm has autofocus and low light capability(good for traveling), and voigtlander 21mm is so small and people dont really care. I felt in love with Voigtlander and pulling my hairs left and right. I'm currently waiting for voigtlander 40mm f1.2 and owns Zeiss 35mm f1.4. I'll probably replace 35mm f1.4 w/ 24mm f1.4 but I am not sure if that's wise thing to do. Mind if i ask what are your reasons to keep both? Thanks in advance!

Took the fam on a work trip. Weather was horrible, but snagged a couple shots in the guest quarters and on the road. Zone focused through a rainy windshield at f/5.6, just at the edge of the infinity symbol.

I think my 2nd copy is a keeper.
Took it out yesterday and compared to the 21 Lox and 20/2.8 AIS Nikkor (just for fun).
As you all know the Lox is the standard at ~20mm and is excellent even wide open.
The poor Nikkor couldn't get sharp on the frame borders even at f/8. Long overdue to sell.
This copy of the 21/3.5 is good enough at f/4 and f/5.6 at the landscape frame edges for most of my uses that require a small and light 21mm. Really wish it were Lox good at f/5.6, but you can't expect smaller, lighter, less expensive, AND as good as the Lox now can you?
It will now go in the bag on hiking/climbing and perhaps vacations in my quest to make up for lack of youth with a smaller and lighter full-frame kit.

I received my lens last week, but the weather has been poor and I haven't really had a chance to put the lens through the paces. Mostly home photos of kids and some dreary afternoon park walks. Did a test for centering and my copy seems good. I have an a7iii, not an aR, and I couldn't see much of a mid-field resolution dip on 24mp images at infinity focus. F5.6 was nearly as a sharp as F8 on the edges. The lens feels incredibly solid and getting sunstars from F4 is nice (although I haven't had an appropriate scene to really compose properly).
