True, true. I'm also wondering - does anyone actually find the digital distance scale useful? Seriously curious - not trolling.

Exactly - it's annoying that while at 100% magnification (or any magnification) that changing the aperture ring pops you out of that mode. This is a case of the software guys not being photo geeks and not using the camera themselves.

I never have found it useful and also found it to be annoying.

I prefer having the distance scale (CV) to not having it (e.g. Loxia) so I can get an idea on focusing distance through EVF while focusing, but I think it would be better if there was a setting that allowed it to be removed from view for those who don't like it. I haven't been distracted by it personally though.
I agree that the magnified view should not exit when changing aperture. I sometimes accidentally change the aperture while focusing in the magnified view particularly with the CV 21/3.5 and it's not nice to have it drop out from magnified view in those cases. I don't typically change aperture in magnified view on purpose though.

I find it very vague. It would be very useful if it was more precise.

I am curious, did you find time to test the new lens? Is it better?

Took some quick snaps of downtown with the new lens and I think it's better than my first copy, but we'll see when I get to look at the images side by side. This copy seems to allow me to go ever so slightly beyond best infinity focus.
One thing with this lens is that the mid-zone dip along the diagonal happens to lie on the right/left edge of the frame when taking a landscape orientation shot with the horizon along the middle of the frame.
Unsharp corners can be tolerated usually if there's nothing of detail or in focus there, but the frame edges need to be sharp....Show more →

I want to buy a wide angle (<24mm) end of this month. Will be used mainly for landscapes with my A7riii. I already have the Tamron 28-75.
First , thank you all for the detailed reviews of this lens. This thread is very useful.
The conclusion from FredM has almost convinced me get the CV 21 f3.5. But I still wonder if the mid-frame sharpness issue will bother me.
So I'm still having a hard time to decide between the CV and Loxia:
A used Loxia 21mm can be found sometimes for ~ $1000
The Voigtlander will probably be at ~$600 during Black Friday. (Ebay coupon or other)
- Loxia seems to have better contrast/sharpness overall, but the CV is quite good already, at least from f/6.3
- The Loxia 21mm can be used from f/2.8 with no (significant) drop of resolution, which can help in low light.
- I care about flare resistance and sunstars: both CV/Loxia look similar in this area, and presumably better (do you confirm ?) than the new Sony 24 GM.
- I'm not a professional, I won't pixel peek too much but want to be able to print a nice A3+ and enjoy the pictures on a big high resolution display.
- I will be hiking with this lens. The Loxia is not too big but obviously the CV has an advantage here.
There are good samples posted here but not at full resolution.
Would it be possible to share some more full resolution pictures to help me decide ? thanks.

I believe several people have posted raw files. There's also a Flickr group, if you want to view things at full res, just click.
I'll be posting more things as I go, but life is very busy with non-photo stuff right now and I don't want to just post family shots.

I believe Fred's test shows that if sharpness into the corners and micro contrast are important to you, the Loxia might be the better choice. I had no 21 mm lens and went for the CV 21, and to me the CV is good enough and a joy to use for what I need it for, plus I own other CV lenses...I enjoy using them. Then, would I trade the Loxia for the CV - if I had it- probably not.

Yep, pretty much.
You gotta realize that the CV is being compared to one of the most highly regarded lenses in existence. And did pretty dang well in comparisons, at that.
For my usage it's nothing short of perfect, I no longer lust after the Loxia.

And not to forget Guy's test at closer distance compared to the Loxia 25...where the CV performed pretty well again!

I went with the CV 21 instead of buying the Loxia 21. One big reason is I like how the CV lenses function better with aperture ring out front and knurled focusing ring . In fact I went all Cv 15,21,35 Ultron and 50 1.2 for my MF kit. There all very good lenses for general photographer. Sure your going to get a little better corners on the Loxia glass. But the CV lenses hold up to it very well . Actually if your after smaller and lighter than CV is the way to go. I have a very friendly travel kit now.

As you own the CV15 as well, does it behave similar to the CV21 in terms of sharpness, also in into the corners? I am trying to complete the travel range with CV lenses THANKS!

Well Cosina have made some real winners lately so not totally surprised but I did not think this 21 would compare this well against the Loxia 21 and 25. I think if your out looking at 21 mm lenses which would be CV, Loxia , Tokina Firin 20mm and even throw in the Batis 18 plus zooms than given what we are seeing it’s worth considering no question. I happen to like CV lenses mechanically with knurled focus rings and aperture rings out front. I have the 15,21,50 and thinking about the 35 classic for my travel kit.

I have to go to Big Bronco Monday to test my CV 35 1.7 with PCX. I’ll run the 15 against the 21. I may run the 21 against the Sony 24 too. Need to get a feel for these new lenses. I’ll post the raw comparison..

Hi Guys,
I'm watching your Voigtländer threads since a half year. I bought the 40 1.2, and i love it. Now I'm still waiting for my ordered 21mm.
I really enjoy this Board.
