p.1 #1 · Dancer in the golden light

Congratulations to friscoron for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 2 votes - View Previous Winners

This is from a shoot I did with a dance company for their outdoor portraits. Comments welcome.

Friscoron, love the feel of this portrait and how she looks totally at ease while on point if that is the correct dance term. Your use of the light to highlight her edges really makes her pop in the frame even though there are lighter areas in the background. The only thing I might do if it were my portrait would be to clean up the dark objects in the grass on the camera left side and also one right under her. Great work.

Love the pose, and ooohhh the rim-light is my favorite.

Might have gone a bit lower POV so that her bright shoes didn't blend in with the bright grass, but that might have been a tough angle.

Overall, sublime pose, light, and use of DOF

Nice photo, in focus, and pose captured.

Thanks, Greg. I am laying on the ground for this but there was a slight incline to where the dancer was in relation to me.

Thanks! Because of my angle and the DOF, you don't see it that well but those are leaves. Unless they're really distracting, I usually don't remove those. I might pull the one below her tho, thanks for mentioning all that.

I have a less positive impression mainly because I find the busy background unappealing. I also find the very bright top edge distracting. I do like the pose and the naturalness of your model. Wish there was less of everything else. I would probably bring down the brights in the background. I know that is contrary to your vision but it is my reaction.

I totally understand. I think in a perfect world I'd not have the background highlights. I could even tone it down in post, but the truth is I shot an entire company and they got multiple shots from this location. For me to spend the time to change the background would just not be prudent with the amount of time I allocate to my editor for working these images. Plus, I do want it to be as natural as possible.

Thanks for commenting and sharing your reaction.

I'm really impressed with how effective such a simple pose can be when the other elements are in place -- lighting, body mechanics and posture, focus. Bravo!
