p.1 #1 · sony a7 III - unable to read memory card in slot 1

Hello,

I have a new Sony a7 III

Slot 1 give an error with a Sandisk Extreme Pro 95 MB/sec - SD XC I - 64 GB
error on camera: "unable to read memory card in slot 1"

The memory card is usable in Slot 2

I also tried a Sandisk Pixtor 80 MB/sec SD HC I 16 GB card and it works in slot 1

Have you guys seen this before and have any advice?

What 32 or 64 GB memory card can I get for use in slot 1 that will not result in the above error

you input would be appreciated.

Picked up the A7 III, Tamron 28-75 F2.8 for Sony, Sony GM 100-400

Try Menu Tool Box (Setup) page 6 Recover Image DB to see if that resolves your problem. If not, your card may have failed / gone south / given up the ghost.

Have you tried the card in slot 2 or on your computer? If you still can't read the card using slot 2 or your computer, try reformatting it in the camera. If it is not recognized, it's toast. It happens, all storage will fail at some point. You can try returning it at the shop you purchased it from.

I have two of the Sandisk Extreme Pro 95 MB/sec - SD XC I - 64 GB
the work perfect in slot 2

so not likely a card failure

I see other links to card errors in slot 1

Are the two Sandisk cards that work perfect in slot 2 failing if you put them in Slot 1?

If they don't, put your original suspect card in a PC. If it's not recognized accept your card failed, not the camera.

BTW; I using two of the exact same cards in slot 1 and 2 on my A7III without issue.

I received 2 128 gb cards from Amazon last week and they have that problem. I've heard that Sony is aware of it.

I have had the write protect switch move accidentally when re-inserting the card into the slot (either one). Any chance this is what happened?

This particular bug stops slot 1 from using the cards, but slot 2 is typically fine. Similar symptoms as the write lock but not the same issue.

Yes, but this bug seems to be directed at 128MB cards, the OP's was a 64, which seems to be a proven good card, so the write protect switch was a possibility.

Unfortunately, the list has ONLY Sony cards on it, (and may are not even listed as fully compatible) so the vast majority of users are all using incompatible cards!

Short Version: Yes, I had issues with 2 new purchase 128GB ExtremePro UHS-I SD cards, but a 9 month older one and my (3) 64 GB ExtremePro UHS-I SD cards work fine.

Long Version: Bought the newest ExtremePro 95MBs/R and 90MBs/W V30 UHS-I SD cards in both 64 and 128GB when I bought a Panasonic G9 in January of this year. Both the slots in the G9 are UHS-II and the cards worked fine. Bought a couple more identical 64GB UHS-I cards a few weeks later as they were just a bit over $30 on sale. All 4 cards also work fine in my D500 slot II which is UHS-II. When I got my A7III a month ago I put the 128GB card in Slot 1 and the 64GB in slot II. They work just fine and I did put the 2 other 64GB cards in the A7III and they worked fine too.

About 2 weeks ago Amazon had a sale on the SanDisk 128GB UHS-I cards and I bought one. It was labeled identically to my older 128GB card, however when I put it in slot 1 of the A7III I got the error screen saying it could not read the card in Slot 1, nor could I format the card. Put it in Slot 2 and I could format it and it worked fine. However putting it back into slot I formatted, the same error screen came up. I thought it was defective and returned it. Two days later I got the replacement 128GB card and it had the same issues, it would work in slot 2, but not slot 1.

This time before returning it, I tested the replacement 128GB card in the G9 and D500 and it worked fine in those UHS-II slots. Knowing now it was not the card I called Sony for help. After having me try the card in slot 1 and reading them the error screen, I was finally told that Sony was aware of card errors with SanDisk 128GB SD cards and they were “working on it”. That is all they would say. Their solution was to 1) Buy a Sony 128GB card and use it in slot 1, 2) use the SanDisk 128GB card in slot 2, and 3) call SanDisk for a replacement.

When I called SanDisk and after being transferred up to the pro line dept they had me try the card and text them the error screen. I was told that SanDisk was not aware of any issues with their cards and the A7III and they offered to replace the card.

Edit: San Disk had me verify through a serial number check that the cards were authentic.

In the thread I posted about this at another site one of the regulars there said it was most likely a card controller change (maybe the result of WD buying SanDisk?) and that Sony had not caught up with it yet, but most likely would in a FW update. As my 9 month older 128GB card with identical labeling worked just fine, but 2 brand new ones did not, this makes sense. In the meantime I am using the replacement 128GB card in G9/D500 as needed and it works fine. Plus there is a lifetime limited warranty for replacement if anything happens with read errors in those cameras.

To the OP, as my 64GB cards all work fine, but they are all 8 months old or more, you may have a newer card with the same issue as the 128GB cards. I suggest you call Sony to talk specifically about your 64GB card issue.

original issue solved:

I ordered a Sony M series 64 GB card listed on the Sony "ILCE-7M3 : SD card Compatibility Information" website

http://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/www/cscs/accessories/compatibility.php?area=us&lang=en&mdl=ILCE-7M3&cat=55&loc=en_US

The Sony SF-M64/T SDXC UHS-II cards work fine in Slot 1

Slot 1 Sony SF-M64/T SDXC UHS-II card
Slot 2 Sandisk Extreme Pro 95 MB/sec - SD XC I - 64 GB (SDK-7108)
