How do you intend to transport it? I mean, if you carry two batis maybe 5 l bag is enough but three... Actually how are you carrying the other batises? backpack? are you people happy with summicron, because is the same speed... but not the same size
I always carry my gear in a backpack. I want both arm / hands for navigating through crowds and taking photos. I tried other bags hanging off my shoulder, but they constantly get bumped in crowded places and cause pain on the shoulder.
I'm very interested in this lens; largely because of there being no suitable (for me) alternatives.
This is as close as it gets to plugging the gaping hole in the lineup for a 35/1.8 or 35/2. One could opt for say, the CV40/1.2 but then must deal with MF; or the 35/2.8 or 35/1.4 each with trade-offs to make.
The price of this is less than appealing though for what it is, so I'll wait for a sharp sale.
Personally I’d love a ZA 28/1.8 with identical IQ to the 55. That said I also have no qualms about pairing a 40 with a 28 and 85.

I'm still not 100% convinced that the 40mm FL is for me, but this lens has definitely piqued my interest. For trips when photography isn't the main goal or MF becomes challenging, a wide AF lens would come in handy. However, 40mm is somewhat close to my beloved 55 1.8, hence I the 24 GM might gap better.
Initially I didn't quite understand Fred's and others' strong interest in a 28mm, but thinking about these FL gaps, I now get it: A 28mm prime sized like the 24 GM or smaller (while being better than the 28 2) would pair neatly with the 55 1.8. ...Show more →

I have the 35 2.8 for times when the light allows it and am really thinking about the Batis 40 for times when the light gets dim. I'm OK with that as the 35 2.8 is such a compact lens which can live on one of my cameras during most of the day.
I like everything about it except the bokeh. Looks to very sharp and has great micro-contrast. Colors look really nice. Its a 40mm F/2 so expectations for bokeh aren't too high, but for $1,200 I would want more.
These are all very good questions to ask yourself. My answers to these are the same as yours. I have it on pre-order for several additional reasons.
a) I have the other four Batis lenses and I am a huge fan on constant ergonomics.
b) The weight is more important to to me than the size. If I can accept the size of the 85 and 25 why not this? Sure you want a lens you will use a lot to be smaller but this is OK for me.
c) I own the 35/2.8 and the 55/1.8 but I am willing to see if this works to replace them both. The 55mm on occasion is too long and the 35/2.8 too slow so hopefully this is the Goldie Locks lens, Just right.
d) I am hoping it is not the last one and that they do a 15mm. Of course if they do the 15mm as a Loxia I will probably buy it. I have the 21, 35, 50 of those as well.
e) I will spend some time before it is available getting used to 40mm by adapting my Canon 40mm / 2.8 to my Sony cameras.
e) With it pre-ordered I still have until November to back out if something comes out that I find problematic.

Here are all the questions I asked myself about the B40:
Will I like the rendering better than the FE 35 2.8/55 1.8? Almost certainly yes.
Is it small/light enough to serve as a primary travel/street lens? Yes, lighter than FE 35 1.4, ZM 35 1.4, FE50 1.4
Will it get me out of the clown show that can be TAP in the field? Hell yes.
Will it be part of a system that is more versatile/flexible than settling on an RX1R II? For me, Yes.
Can I live with the fact that it is 40 and not 35? Yes and the CF ability will be a bonus, one I think I'll really like.
Have I lived with greater compromises to stay full frame and compact with an interchangeable lens mount? Yes.

how are you moving your gear arround? backpack, or messenger bag,...? which one are you using with your batis lenses?

For small setup I can recomend PeakDesign Sling 5L.
It perfectly fit with the two Batis lenses (mine ideal 40+85?) and the Sony A7/9 body between them.
I use both depending on where I am going and how much gear I want to take. For a large backpack I take a Mindshift Gear Backlight 26L which allows me to take 2 bodies and up to 6-7 lens!. I have ThinkTANK Urban Approach 15 which is a smaller backpack that takes a gripped body and 5 lenses. Than I have a two messenger / shoulder bags that I take a body and three lenses. In all my bags I very my lenses between zooms and primes depending on what I plan to shoot.

very interesting for me the 15l thinkthank! it is comfortable to carry?
speaking of batis lenses, you mention you have a shoulder bag in which 3 of them enter. i understand one mounted, plus two additional unmounted. which bag is this?
I have a retrospective series 6l. i have lox 21, ultron 35, cron 90 and fe 55. heavy but leaving space for an additional lens. I use collapsible rubber hoods to minimize space. But with batises,... ummm, 3, with the hoods, not sure..., whithout, maybe... This even more critical in winter, with globes to keep and hot
sorry for my insistent questions, but in my experience, the best lens is the one one uses...
regards and looking forward for answers.

the body not mounted to any of the lenses?
When I mount B85 with hood to Sony A9, it fits just only for this combination.
But when you take off the hood, then probably fits with another lense too.
I do not have another lense this time, but when I leave just B85+A9 mounted, then I can put the lens hood separately into the bag. And lens hood is thicker than the lense, so I guess it could work too (I do not have another Batis than B85, but I can put to the bag for example B85+A9 and separately Sony 10-18 lens).
