No one cares really about the content at this point. Its more about subject distance , aperture and background distance where we can get a feel for what the bokeh and bokeh balls are doing. So please post away
Right now its testing phase
Ok
I have made a really quick comparison between Sony/Zeiss 55mm and the Batis to see the real difference as I maybe would replace the 55mm and sell it. But currently I'm not so sure - maybe I keep both as the 55mm is really small.
That first shot of your son in the DPreview thread is awesome. I clicked on the 'download JPG' button and zoomed in and the detail in his eye is extraordinary. Tells me EyeAF working very well.
Based on these samples and the first from 30 Days of Batis, I'm quickly thinking that it is time to place a pre-order. Wonder which store is more likely to get good stock fast - any ideas from those who have pre-ordered Zeiss lenses from BH, Adorama, etc?

But currently Eye-AF is at least for my experience not as consistent as with my trusty 55mm 1,8 but I have to try this more often. Now this is my opinion that the AF performance in total is not sooooo good as I have expected it and compared to the really old Sony/Zeiss 55.
I also have to say the following regarding the Bokeh ball examples: I wanted to match the framing but with the Batis you could go much closer as with the 55mm. And THIS is the real advantage. For some smaller things at a wedding for example this comes in very handy and I could forget the not so perfect rounded Bokeh balls. This was the only reason I have bought the Batis - otherwise I'm very satisfied with the 55mm
here are the examples from the minimum focus distance.
You see at the ISO values that even the aperture value is on 2,0 it must be stopped down more.
But the performance close is way better with the Batis. This is clearly shown in the example (fringing).
Regarding AF performance I have received a reply from Zeiss directly and they said that it has an impact on AF performance what I have set on the AF-limiter switch. Also it is clear that this lens needs more turning of the AF motor as it has more reach into macro capability. Sorry for my bad english.

So with the limiter set to the middle option (0.4mm - infinity), does the AF (and especially EyeAF) match your results with the 55?
Thank you very much for answering these questions. As you can see, many of us have been anxiously awaiting this lens.

I still see a small speed difference with advantage for the 55 but what I see is that Eye Af is more often hitting the glasses of my wife or the eyebrow instead of the eye ball. But I need to do more testing with my young son running.

I'm not using eye af but it seems to be very slightly front focusing.
I like what I'm seeing. Colors, sharpness and micro-contrast are very Zeiss typical. Background/bokeh is not the best but I can live with it. No Batis lenses have perfect background.
This lens is so versatile...family activities, travel, hiking, walking about, social events, portraits, close-ups, landscapes...a great one-lens (& light weight) solution for me. Pair this with a 24mm 1.4 GM (or B25), plus my 85mm 1.8 then I'm done. Don't pixel peeping to much, many people will be pleased
It seems to have the same frantic, busy bokeh (rendering of out of focus areas in the background) as my Loxia 35 2. I can't be the only one seeing that....I'm NOT talking about bokeh balls here, but the crazy jittery out of focus lines and curves in the backgrounds. Maybe I'm mis-defining....or hallucinating.

Could you confirm if your copy is front focusing? I'm shooting in AF-S and it's been consistently just in front of the focus point.

Beg pardon. Didn't realize it was a comment race. I actually saw your comment though I didn't click through the links. Didn't see anything about the issue I was trying to describe.

Didn't mean it like that. I was just saying that I saw what you described when the first image samples surfaced. I meant to say I'm in agreement here. I was hoping the Batis 40/2 would render more like the Sonnar 35/2...
Sorry. Thanks. So is there good fast prime between 25 and 55? I don't use my Loxia 35 much because I just don't love the rendering....Actually prefer to shoot my RX1 if I'm going to be using that focal length.
