I've had my Z6 for several weeks and I'm really loving this camera. Most of the usage has been with the 24-70S and an adapted 70-200/2.8G on the FTZ. Both have performed quite well for my needs. I've also been using my chipped CV40/2 and CV90/3.5 SL-II lenses, but only prior to the firmware update. I look forward to seeing if there's been any improvement in EVF lag while magnified now that the update is live.
I've got a kit of ZM lenses for my M10 but kept all of the front filters from my days of modifying them for adaptation to the Sony A7 series cameras. I may have to give them a whirl on the Z6, especially the ZM18/4 and ZM25/2.8. I expect them to perform better than they did on Sony based on Michael's experiences with adapting Leica lenses, but I'll have to experiment with how many and which shims to remove.
Lastly, I just purchased a 300/4 PF, my first ever modern telephoto. My family is heading to Yellowstone for the first time this year, and I'll have a TC-14e iii to mate with it when needed. I was torn on whether to borrow a friend's 300/2.8 VR or 200-400/4 VR, but those lenses are just so big to bring along with my wife and two smaller kids. The PF is a game changer, so small and light for its capabilities, lighter than my ZF.2 35/1.4 classic in fact. The autofocus with that lens is quick (but noisy) and accurate. The rendering is nice as well.
The Z series cameras are perfect for someone like me who wants to mix AF and MF lenses with a consistent body to use, and I get EXIF with many of my legacy lenses. For small and light I'll hold onto the M10 and ZM lenses, but otherwise the Z cameras make for a compelling system to buy into.

Just ordered a VM 40/1.2 and looking forward even more now to trying it out after seeing your shots in this thread. I’ve also recently acquired a VM 28/2 Ultron that I’m having fun with on my Z7.

Your shots and comments on the 85/1.4 D are making me more than a little inclined to buy another copy of this lens. I had one previously, but sold it almost two years ago, along with my 135DC to finance more modern glass. Would make a nice companion to my 28/1.4 D that I picked up since.

I never used that lens and I didn't pay much attention for that lens either. I think if I am back to Sony on rumored 16bit global shutter A9ii, I will seriously look at it but I think it is hard to not consider their new 135GM if I want a 135. I personally don't think it has best rendering compare to 135art and 105E for intend usage but overall I think it is the crown mid-tele glass with best resolution and super fast and reliable focus and still have very nice rendering. However, same as you, I feel 135mm has very limited usage. The longest one I will use daily is 100mm but I still prefer 75~85mm lens to 135 I 'd say. For lot of stuff, 85-100 can create similar work of 135 with foot work, but not other way around. Out of all Sony GM, I still like their 85gm the best. 24 is great but again that is not my focal length.
From modern year, I personally think Nikon's 105f1.4E has the pinnacle rendering out of all latest glasses. (even include Leica ones) and 58G miss a little bit definition WO. I just realize that many of their old Nikon AF-D glasses have quite special rendering such as 135DC, 105DC, 28f1.4D and this 85D. though color seems always a little bit on mute side. For now I am good with 85D only. This kind of glasses will not be seen in the future.

My Z7 adapted kit looks like this currently... would like a recommendation to fill in the obvious gap:
Distagon 15/2.8 ZF.2
VM 21/4 Color Skopar
Distagon 25/2 ZF.2
VM 28/2 Ultron
VM 40/1.2 Ultron (en route)
CV 125/2.5 SLII APO
Novoflex M/Z
Any suggestions? I was thinking maybe a Voigtlander 75...

Beautiful shot Michael! I am enjoying the Z7 so far and I really do think it will be the most versatile camera for adapted glass. Right now I am itching for Voigtlander to release their Sony E mount lens to Z7 camera adapter. I have the three new Zeiss Loxia lenses 21mm, 25mm, and 85mm that I think will be fantastic on the Z7. They all have entrance pupils of over 60mm, which is a lot longer than the entrance pupil for the Loxia 35 which is less than 18mm. Such a difference in entrance pupil suggest the new Loxia lenses have a lot longer exit pupil as well and should perform well even with the thinner sensor stack on the Z7.
They also help round out some really nice kits for the Z7. Here is a compelling kit for example:
Voigtlander M 15 f/4.5 III
Loxia 21 f/2.8
7 Artisans 28 f/1.4
Voigtlander M 50 f/1.2
Loxia 85 f/2.4
Leica M 135 f/3.4 APO
You could have a very similar kit with the same lenses on Sony and more would be native mount, but the lenses would be 187g heavier more than negating the slightly lighter Sony camera. You could also swap out the 7 Artisans 28 in this kit to save even more weight with something like the Leica M 28 f/2 Asph, which undoubtedly works better on the Nikon than the Sony.
Another compelling kit would be:
Milvus 18 f/2.8
Loxia 25 f/2.4
Voigtlander M 35 f/1.7
Voigtlander M 75 f/1.5
Leica M 135 f/3.4 APO
This kit wouldn't really be possible on a Sony as the very nice Voigtlander M 35 f/1.7 doesn't play well with the Sony sensor, and again if you are willing to sacrifice a little quality for weight saving you could swap out the Milvus 18 for the Leica M 18 SEM and although that lens isn't perfect on the Nikon it isn't useable on the Sony.
The real kicker for me in getting the Nikon, however, is thinking about even longer lenses. In time I am planning to get the Nikon 300 f/4 PF and there is nothing like that available for a non-Nikon platform. I am also going to get the Nikon 50 f/1.8S, which is quite the wonder of a little lens and clearly better than the Sony 55 f/1.8. When a do want a shorter AF lens that is a wonderful option. In addition, I will adapt Olympus OM, Canon FD, Leica R, Contax C/Y, Angenieux, and Hasselblad V making the Nikon Z mount super adaptable.
I do see very much the appeal of something like the Panasonic S1/S1R that could mount the new Leica L mount glass and the Leica S glass. It would be a wonderful combination. The Leica L 21,28, 50, & 90 sum microns together with the Leica S 120 f/2.5 APO macro seems very close to ideal. In the end, however, I decided my bigger camera is going to be medium format and if I go Leica I will move to Leica M instead of Leica L....Show more →

I have the 85 F1.4D too, but I like the 105 DC F2 rendering more. I would never let go my 105 DC.
Current Z7 manual lens:
CV 15 III F4.5
CV 50 F1.2
85 F1.4 D
105 DC
Sigma 150 F2.8
Planning to get :
CV 110 F2.5
CV 21 F1.4

Hi,
You might consider the great Zeiss 50mm f/1.5; the CV 65, although it's another macro, it's still a great lens. It's the sony-mount one but there is a kipon adapter out now;
or, the CV 75mm f/1.8 which is great for portraits and good generally all around;
and, maybe the Zeiss 85mm f/4 an often overlooked excellent and smallish lens.
Try these for starters.

Have fun and post some photos here! That thread is really tempting... still deciding if I should give this lens to myself as a birthday present this year.

Thanks, Joe. I’ve been looking at the CV 75... or maybe adapt the new 110 macro. I’m trying to stay with either F/Z or M/Z though. Too many adapters make me nervous.

If you are going to go with a Voigtlander 75, then I would definitely wait to see what the announced CV 75 f/1.5 looks like. I think that is going to be a very nice lens. It is coming out in Leica M mount and should be available later this year some time.

Thanks for the info, Steve. I wasn’t aware of that... I’m in no hurry, so I’ll look forward to its release.

I went to my son's karate showcase today and took my Angenieux 180 f/2.3 to shoot on my Nikon Z7. These were a few of my favorites.

The problem with 85D is Nikon Z doesn't support AF for AF-D glasses. I use it as full manual lens which I like anyway. It is definitely one of smallest and lightest 85mm f1.4 glasses now and with real focus and aperture ring and better build quality that can last forever.
I hope there is more version of FTZ adapter available that include AF capability for AF-D and maybe adding control ring or drop in filter slots as Canon did. Utilizing the existing F mount advantage is one of selling point to differentiate Nikon in MILC market.
Adding EXIF for AIS or any adapted glasses with focus confirmation are other two features that can really help a niche but not a small crowd who consider their MILC need. I hope Nikon get this figured out earlier than later.
Some random 85D snap shots with batch process. Even most fast glasses will behave nice here, I'd say I still love the rendering of sharpness and smooth ratio between subject and background. I still think this is one of better one if not the best one in term of Bokeh.
I very like the both Voigtlander lens. I plan to get the Voigtlander 110 F2.5 E mount once I have the TechArt TZE-01 which I pre-order last week. Hopefully get it next month.

I agree about the 85; in spite of its MF limitations on the Z, its still a performer. I keep (so far) my 28/1.4 AF-D for the same reason... even though I primarily use a 28/2 VM most of the time. Hard to let go of that character.
