p.1 #1 · D850 D810 D800 D500 custom photo bank U1 U2 mode info | |
Nikon D750 has U1 U2 modes, great for people who take the time to dial in their cameras.
One could set U1 for portraits and U2 for landscapes. The camera remembers every setting you had and can instantly prepare you for the next "shot".
However, with D8xx, Nikon has crippled the cameras, removing the U1, U2 approach and giving us an over-engineered, but UNPRACTICAL arrangement.
They give us three things:
1. Photo Shooting Menu Bank
The first one is “Photo Shooting Menu Bank”, which allows you to store up to 4 different shooting menu settings. You can name each bank with a custom name like “Portrait”, “Sports”, etc. These are what you would from U1 or U2.
2. Extended Photo Menu Bank
Extended Photo Menu Bank is tricky:
Everyone usually turns this off.
Select On to include exposure and flash modes, shutter speed (modes S and M only), and aperture (modes A and M only) in the information recorded in each of the four photo shooting menu banks, to be recalled whenever the bank is selected. Selecting Off restores the values in effect before On was selected.
3. Custom Setting Menu
The "Custom Setting Menu" is all the stuff that you setup deep in the menu, like jpg/raw, cards, fine//normal, BBF, all the dials, I mean.... everything serious! Most of this, you won't want to change!!! So, I think most of us would just stay in Custom Setting Bank A all the time. The only reason for Custom Banks is for when other folks use the camera, IMO.

It's not explained well in the books or ANYWHERE online that I could find, but it is worth a look at the link above. I will try to expand on this.
Here is how you could set up FOUR different Banks:
1. set up the camera, deep in menu, and then also how you want to shoot when you're in Photo Bank A, let's call it portrait
2. turn on extended photo menu banks
3. in "i" you should see A and A, name the Photo Bank A - portrait, and you'll be in bank A for settings.
4. now set up Bank B, for sports, name Photo Bank B - sports, and you'll still be in bank A for settings.
5. now set up Bank C, for flash, name Photo Bank C - flash, and you'll still be in bank A for settings.
6. now set up Bank D, for when you hand the camera to a rookie, name Photo Bank D - rookie, and then go into bank (keep it consistent) D for settings, and turn BBF off, allow the shutter button to focus, turn on anti flickr, etc, but you REALLY need to go into the deep menu options once you change the settings bank to B, b/c it's like a new camera, when you're here. settings A bank has all the stuff you originally set it up for.
so now you have FOUR ARRANGEMENTS. It doesn't seem to remember AF method. But it remembers a lot of stuff. It'll REALLY help someone who uses a flash at times. Also for folks who sometimes use Auto ISO with min SS. for example. Photo Bank A for me, is portrait in full manual. Photo Bank B for me, is portrait in A mode, with Auto Iso 64 base, 800 max with flash, 6400 max without flash. Photo Bank C and D, so forth.
When you hand the camera to a rookie, you can hit "i", photo bank D, settings bank D, and now they can use the camera somewhat easily. it just takes a few seconds, and that "i" setting is cool, go in and hit the OK button.
It's really bizarre that they can't give us a U1/U2 type approach, but this is a decent go-around for this, B student.
Nikon how about a firmware update?
is the D500 like this, or is it more like a D750?
Please offer feedback, does this help?
Did I mess something up, post corrections, questions, thank you.
