p.1 #1 · Apotheosis of Dawn: Boulder Mail Trail twisted tree
Dawn after a storm: I was about to hike down the Boulder Mail Trail (BMT) to Death Hollow but this awesome twisted tree and developing sunrise made me stop and enjoy a little pre-adventure beauty. I set up my tripod several minutes before this shot and took a photo about every 2 or 3 minutes. The clouds grew more colorful and purple. Then the light touched the treetops around me and I took this exposure.

Super image Gordon. The tree looks alive. It is either arching its back or taking a bow to the sunrise. That thing would make a great foreground silhouette for a milkyway shot.

Really nice work here Gordon. Well composed.
Thanks everyone. A couple of you mentioned framing. I tried a couple compositions of this tree and initially had a shot taken to the left of this location. When the color in the sky grew more and more, I recomposed the shot to include more of that. I tried not to get too close to the tree because I wanted to include some sandstone rubble at the roots too.

Love the sky in this one, Gordon. The tree looks like an old man. Any from Death Hollow?
Thank you Stan. I agree this tree has some humanoid features and would be the size of a very tall man (maybe 8 feet high).
I DO have some photos from Death Hollow . . . but that's going to be a separate post, probably several posts. Death Hollow's been on my bucket list for 10 years and this summer I did it! I was not disappointed. The scenery there is wonderful and the serenity also unforgettable.

That's a very good idea and suggestion. This particular tree is just at the trailhead, literally 50 feet from where I parked my car and would be a good night photography subject. If you ever go there, it would not be too hard to find.

It would also be interesting to hear which route you took, distance hiked, shuttle set-up, etc. If you did the full hike, my hat's off to you.

Gordon, nice image and love the sky. I do wonder if you would have been better off shooting from much lower, to include the tree and awesome sky. The inclusion of all the green for me, takes away from drama of the image.

You are welcome. You've taken me to several places with your photos over the years also.

Thanks Kevin. I did try shooting higher and lower than this particular shot. I couldn't find an angle that included enough of the rocky stuff at the bottom and didn't distort the tree too much. I explored several angles but felt this was the best keeper. I'll keep looking for low angles in the future though. Those can be very dramatic shots!
