That is about all we heard for two hours of shooting these Barred Owls in the dark forest around a small river yesterday evening. They have young in the area but we didn't see them last night although others saw them that afternoon and the day before. The parents are very active in the evenings and I believe there was more than two adults present as there was a lot of flying around and calling out....

Well captured Geoff.
I find this type of photography really pushes the boundaries of camera and lens combo to focus and track a subject in this dark forest environment.
I was shooting with the 1DX II + 400 DO II the previous evening and had great success.
That evening, thought I would try the 1DX II + 100-400 II, not much success..
But it was a fun evening regardless...

Lovely set of difficult birds to find, let alone photograph. A query Geoff -is your -1EV juat trying to keep ISO down a bit, knowing you can raise EV without much penalty in post?

In this case I was in full manual mode setting everything myself but the EXIF still records the -1EV I had set previously when using Auto-ISO....the -1EV was having no effect on these shots.
I do typically shoot my Nikon cameras at -0.7 (or -0.3EV) when using Auto-ISO as I know the sensors are ISO-less so I'd rather underexpose than overexpose....I'm never worse off if I've already maximized my light gathering exposure values of SS and Aperture for the given situation....

Thanks Pius....you should have seen the sequence I got with the A9/100-400GM at 20FPS this evening...unfortunately they were very sedate this evening so only got two flight runs in...one with the 400DOII on A9 which missed every shot and the other with the A9/100-400GM which probably only missed 4 shots out of about 40...
But I was hoping to have more chances like yesterday and didn't get them to test the 400DOII more on the A9...it only shoots at 10FPS and I feel that the AF drive just isn't fast enough but I need more trials to come to any conclusions...till next time
