Haha thanks guys, about the only time I came close to filling the frame. I knew he was coming but crouched down behind some bushes he didn't see me until too late to avert.

I shot 24 of these last year and not with a camera; decided to
let this one live and for first time used single AF and single point.
He was snacking about 30 feet from me. Limb chicken is the genus species

No MFA has been done to this combo.

Lance remember I'm Nikon naive but used BBF, D25 AF points, continuous AF 10fps,Auto ISO. We're on the road and can't get to the camera but most likely -2/3 exp comp; stays there a lot.

Why kill squirrels.
1.They do lots of damage to my bierd studio out back.
2. There are way way to many of them, and I probably contribute to that by bringing in 200 pounds bierd food each year.
3. We lost two hawks this year, they used to help.
4. I'm a hillibilly. It is what we do (I also trap them and other game).
5. But good news on the horizon. I discovered a new RTH today nearby; I just need to work him in.

High powered air rifle in the city. At the cabin too many choices.

Thank you very much, Jemini. Much appreciated.

For general day to day photography the AF is excellent, but just do not expect D850 performance especially in very low light with slow lenses like the 500 f5.6 PF. The D850 has really spoiled us with it's ridiculously good AF. To be honest, the Z7 it is way better than I was expecting, especially with F mount lenses as I was expecting a real issue with F mount lenses. Using the 70-200 f2.8E FL VR in even lowish light it was fast and accurate but again. not D850 fast. The 500 f5.6

Hi Lance,

I notice that in all your pics that you are using low shutter speeds and I was wondering as to whether all your pics are hand held or with a tripod.
All lovely images and thanks for sharing. . .

Not really showing the process of the 500PF, moreso the D500 as ISO 11,400; but I bet many here already know the D500's sensor belies its size.

Joe - surprised that you got the sharp shot of the stilt with the teleconverter on the 500mm lens using the D850. I was planning on foregoing the use of my teleconverters with this lens but will be giving it a go when the lens arrives next week. B&H has an ETA for the lens of 15 November but getting mine through the NPS program.

I can see this lens being a bit of a game changer for shooting from a small boat. In the past I have used the 80-400mm or 200-500mm zooms in such situations but the AF of the 200-500mm leaves a bit to be desired.

Both Canon and Nikon 500 f4's far outsell the 600 f4's. And the reasons are perfectly obvious - greater cost, size, and weight. The very same reasons why very few wildlife photograhers use a 400 f2.8.

One certainly does not NEED a 600mm for wildlife; birds or otherwise. And one only has to view the Nature & Wildlife Forum regularly to see many excellent wildlife photographs, including ones of birds, that have been taken with lenses under 400mm.

The Canon 800 f5.6 wasn't exactly a great seller, was it? Longer is not always better.

It really depends upon where you shoot. Good luck in Yellowstone photographing bears with a 300mm lens or for that matter photographing birds in Central or South America. If I shot predominately in Florida with its well habituated birds it would be a very different matter. If someone is using bait or feeders to draw birds closer then a shorter lens can be used or for that matter one can go to a zoo.

When a 500mm lens provides a 177% larger image size than a 300mm one it has an impact. With my 500mm f/4 I was having to use it with the 1.4x telecoverter to get the image size I needed with small birds and the autofocus was working with f/5.6 in what is often dim light in jungles and dense forest cover.

The 600mm f/4 provides a 44% increase in image size over the 500mm and the new E version of the 600mm weighs roughly the same as my old 500mm f/4 G lens.

I'm sure most of us are already convinced by the IQ of the lens. I was doing a final test of TC-14E III in real world. First pic is with TC-14E III, second one without TC from same position within seconds and third one WITHOUT TC from a closer place, few minutes later. So IMO, the TC-14E III works well.

Rest are some shots of same heron. Here in Florida, birds are our friends. They don't mind fishing few feet away from us
