Thanks...
I love wildlife landscapes and I hoped that this lens would be sharp when shooting distant subjects... Thus far, I am not disappointed

That’s nice to hear. I feel like the primes gain their edge at longer distances. I doubt there is much real world difference between my 200-500 and the 500 PF closeup. It’s in difficult lighting and longer distances that things start to change in my opinion.
Daniel I don't know (copy variation among other variables) that you'll see a difference between the 500PF and the Nikkor 200-500 even at long distances (atmospherics eh)...I don't know of any concrete comparisons but I've seen plenty of 200-500 shots at 500 that are outstanding. What I think you'd notice instantly is the weight torquing on your elbows, wrists, knees, lower back
I figured long ago that a Tamron 150-600 can look really good at 15 feet, just as good as my 500ISii and that the difference as you state is distance dependent and a really good reason for all of us to get close as possible. Easier said than done! Especially when your (my) bones creak louder than the shutter!
He got someone to do his deal as the post is updated now. I wonder why he wanted it so desperately for those two weeks?
.....my guess is two words a__________ s_____

Still trying to figure out what "a__________ s_____" is....
I received word from BJPhoto after they talked to their rep
"We might be getting an allocation in Nikon's next shipment, but not sure exactly when that is."
So basically, neither the rep nor they have any idea when they are getting any.
Yea, I don't expect this to hit some of the major retailers until November at the very earliest. All of the estimations I received from CS Reps at the popular online retailers are past due.
To those who have received theirs, would be great to see more comparison shots with the 200-500 5.6. No TC, at 5.6, w/ identical ISO and Shutter against a stationary target.

I'll give you a few more letters..... affi.......sa.....
I don't have much hope of getting a 500PF anytime soon and I am pretty close to just cancelling my order anyways.

kriskunisch, sorry can't help. I'm not adding a monopod dependent 200-500mm. The 500PF is what it is. I'm satisfield. In fact the 300PF on the a9 with 1.4TCiii is a dream. The 400DOii+MC-11 is a dream. All I need is Commlite to up the game with the a9+500PF and all will be good in the world.

You certainly have a nice collection of birding combo's already!
What would you prefer in the end, the Nikon 500PF on the D500, or the Sony 100-400GM + 1.4TC on the coming mini A9, IQ wise and performance wise?

Did you see my blog? I posted a link where I did a test like this. I had intended on doing another more detailed test, but the weather in Minnesota has made a further testing impossible. Once it stops raining I will get out and try to control all the variables that were not controlled in my prior test.

Chris the D500/500PF is a great kit. I just prefer Sony. The EVF really means a lot to me. Honestly with the Nikon I don't know if I have anything decent until I get to a PC. My eyes just can't tell in the field using the LCD.
Performance? Assuming the a9000 will be like its big brother, well there is no contest eh.
IQ? Well no matter what that's going to depend on how close I can get to the subject. The D500 has a great sensor but the a9000's sensor is now a gen or two beyond it so can only bet on the new Sony.
Haha, look at me talking like the a9000/mini-a9 is real. I'm in fantasy land.

Great comparison, Bruce! My only issue with your write-up is that it is now tempting me to buy the 500 PF.
Until now, I was convincing myself that with its 5.6 aperture, it won't be $2500 better than my Tammy 150-600 in low light and at distance. I am now having second thoughts..
