Settings are accurate. It was extremely bright out that morning, so I had rolled the EC back to preserve the whites. Shot Manual, except Auto ISO.
It's 700mm because I had a 1.4xTC on the 500PF.
Hmmm that left off the 1.5 crop from the D500 so that is a focal length of 1050mm FF equivalent. Also you should look into the Highlight Weighed meter mode. It exposes for any white in the frame and preserves the highlights. I use that all the time other than backlit subjects or dark subjects. Ideal for birds with white like Bald Eagles or the hawk

Thanks Eric.
True, the "effective FL" would equate to 1050, EXIF data doesn't care if your're shooting FF or crop so the displayed data is actual FL.
I tried Highlight Metering several years ago and struggled to get comfortable with it and ultimately went back to Spot Metering which generally works quite well for me.
Perhaps I'll give it another go & see what I can do with it. Thanks for the nudge.

Thanks again Bruce for the kind words! I must say I think the gear covers up a bit of my deficiencies.
It's helpful to be so close to Conowingo Dam (i live just 25 min from it) as the Eagles will congregate there. It's considered the 3rd best place in the country to photo Bald Eagles. You have to make the trip out some November or in mid April during the Shad spawn.
Eric,
Judging by the Conowingo photos you post on FB, you have no deficiencies and get great results with the D500 and 500PF. I shoot with the SONY A1 and 200-600 lens but lust over the 500pf which I used to own back in my Nikon days..

Thank you Laslo, appreciate the kind words. Other than being a Nikon user. The main reason i stayed with Nikon and waited for them to get their crap together with the AF was this lens. They will have to pry it from my cold dead hands. Especially after seeing it perform on the Z9

I’m planning to go to Conowingo on Friday. Maybe I’ll get to meet you.
Bald Eagle this morning sitting atop church steeple near where I live. Used a D500 and 500pf with a x1.4 converter. Was dark and windy this morning here in South Carolina.
Nice shots. In my neck of the woods. Did you see any ducks?

Headed to Ding Darling NWR with the Z7 and 500 PF yesterday. Not very productive in terms of images, but at least the light was nice!
