After all the talk I made about waiting for the 600 5.6, I pre-ordered the 500 5.6 PF today (B&H).
I believe this is going to be a killer wildlife lens (in every way!) on the D850 (and the D500 too) ! Looks like it is going to be very quick, agile and very sharp.
Well, I have 30 days to decide if I will keep it.
Cannot wait to see how fast it acquires BIF. When I press that AF button under my right thumb, I hope it is in-focus almost instantly. What do you think, too much to ask?
With my D850 I acquire with “Single" and hold focus with "AF Auto" (Arbitrage’s suggestion..and so far I like it).
Doubt this 500 5.6 PF will arrive in time to catch my loons *before* they head for their wintering waters. But it will be here for wintering loons and ducks.
My NPS preorder confirmation came today, and they’re expecting orders to start shipping late September. I'm assuming if it's that soon boxes would be leaving the factory shortly and they’d already know if there were any delays.
We'll see if the timing of a pre-order means anything...
I made my pre-order around 6:00 am on August 23rd and just filed the order w/ NPS this morning...
I am really wanting to see some more samples... I'll even take information from Nikon Ambassadors even though it will be biased.

Geoff go ahead and begin YOUR thread. Who am I to contest...I'm a Sony intruder in Nikonian land
I'll hit you up for settings. Thanks.
p.s. a big fat Sony XQD card and dual reader have shipped.
Trying to think what else the D500/500PF combo needs. Oh I remember. They need
a 300PF
OMG, just had a nightmare reflection back to my clickity clik days. MFA
But I see Professor Steve has a vid on the internal MFA. Like going back to school.
I currently shoot Sony and don't like the feel of the bodies, even with the battery grip (results/performance are amazing, but actually using the cameras is so "blah" for me... I'm not a professional so enjoying taking photos is a decent part of it for me, hah ). I want to switch back to a D500 and keep almost talking myself into it.
Hmmm.... after resisting 500/5.6 PF for awhile now, I think I might need to jump on board. I have a trip in December that I will have very little room left for lenses but there is supposed to be great for birds as it is nesting season there. It is very unlikely that I would have room for 500/4e FL. I suppose if I sell my 200-500 and get 500 PF,
that might be more interesting.

Interesting that B&H will not ship this lens to Canada.
They won't ship any Nikon products to Canada...they never have...at least not since I started using Nikon....I think it is a Nikon policy....
They do ship grey market Nikon to Canada if they happen to have stock. There won't be any grey market 500PFs flooding the NY warehouse anytime soon though

While there are always a few exceptions, in general, B&H only sells the grey market import when they don't have stock of the version with a Nikon USA warranty. As of 8/18, the only exceptions were the 200-400 f4, 24 1.8 and the manual focus AI-S lenses. I think they were forced to generally stop selling both versions by Nikon.

Don't worry most of us will end up using it on dual card slot Sony MILCs anyways...using it on antique dinosaur DSLRs is so Q2 2018......
i'll be sailing along with my dinosaur, change isn't always a good thing, hell i wish it was still the 1970's....music was better, bars were better, cars were nicer, no digital, no internet, film cameras, manual focus, no whining about how my camera only has one roll of film it so it can't be a pro camera, people didn't depend on 20fps to get a shot, at 20fps may as well just go out and shoot video....my dinosaur does everything i want it to do except work with this new lens
@brian_sp@@
Very well said.
Sometimes I really wonder what this generation of photographers are actually looking for? Aiming to perfect their photography skills or photographic gears. In the good old days photographers used whatever available to produce their masterpieces that until today with all those new gears we have is still not able to out match. The next thing is everytime we change gears, we have to restart learning and customizing everything all over again, AFFT, WB, exposure and individual's custom settings and profiles. Two identical cameras or lenses will never perform the same, because the so called consumer gears we are buying now are mass produced and have quite a large tolerance in order to make them affordable. Yes, even your pro bodies and so call pro lenses with gold, red or whatever rings and marking. The next thing is new gears comes out every couple of years and old gears get obsoleted every couple of months as competitors comes out with the newest and latest. One will never end chasing after other than disposing them at a loss or as junks if no one wants them due to too many in the market.

People probably just argued with themselves back then....but I wouldn't know since I only lived for 8 months in that decade
I'm also sure you realize my post was just fun sarcastic humour (hence the grinning angel)...I personally wouldn't even think about adapting a Nikon lens to my Sony as even with the much better Canon adaptors the experience isn't what I want for most of my shooting
People didn't need 14 FPS either to get the shot or 12 or 10 or 7 or 5 or 3 or 2....all they ever needed was for something to take "a" shot. But I can guarantee they never got a shot of a Common Yellowthroat in full flight with whatever they were using....now probably no one needs a shot of a Yellowthroat in flight but then again no one needs a shot of 99% of what gets photographed out there. Its all for fun...do you keep your D850 set at Single frame advance AF-S when out shooting warblers??
