p.3 #1 · Why I like my D750 more than the D850

I agree, I currently own the 10-20mm AF-P and 18-55mm AF-P that I use with a D5300 for a lightweight travel kit, these little lenses are amazing. I also owned the 70-300mm DX AF-P it too was amazing, but I sold it to get the FX version so I could use it on both my D750 and D5300. I find these lenses to perform very nicely. (I kept the 55-200mm VRII because I picked it up on sale for like $120 bucks, not too shabby).

Hmm - I honestly hadn't done a ton of research on the DX lenses. My typical travel kit is a FF equivalent 16-35ish, a fast 35mm equivalent, and either a 50 or 85 for street photographer.

If the 10-20 AF-P is sharp enough, it might make me reconsider adding a D500 to my kit...

Nice pics! That 35mm is a nice little lens isn't it? (agree on the D750 sensor)

One reason I tend to prefer it to the 28mm is actually how small it is. I find that my fam/friends don't freeze up as much when I bring the little 35 f1.8 out as much as when I have the 105 f1.4 leveled on them

I have heard that the D5300 makes for a wonderful small and light travel option!

Here's a pretty solid review on the 10-20mm AF-P: https://photographylife.com/reviews/nikon-10-20mm-dx-vr-af-p

I've only been able to use it a handful of times, zero complaints. I think the size advantage would be muted by the D500 though, haha. On the D5300 it's a cool lightweight and small set up, and quite a bit of fun too. Or maybe that's because I'm on vacation when I use it....but still. The VR is a nice feature as well on this lens.

Ha you are of course right. Drat, I thought I'd come up with a good justification to buy more gear

A D7500 would make a great combo with the 10-20

Keep the IQ of the D500, get a smaller package.

After the original D300, I added a succession of DX bodies: D3000, D5100, D7100 and finally the glorious D500. It sounds ironic to FX ears, but the great thing about the Nikon DX format is lens selection. By that, I mean cheap and cheerful primes and zooms that cover useful ranges, are featherweight, and excellent optical performers. The cutting-edge technology available only for DX is AF-P and collapsible barrels. I did decide that D7xxx bodies are the smallest I want to operate with the 5xxx series having shrunk to an annoying extent and shrinking the controls, too. The D500, SB-300 and 18-55 make a low-weight rig for every casual occasion. For pocket size, there's always the RX100 and cell phones.

Seriously the IQ is quite amazing and the tech gap is narrowing fast. I feel once smart phones include 1" sensors the need for 98% of point and shoot cameras will quickly disappear if it has not already. The Hawei is 1/1.7" (0.59")sensor while the traditional is 1/2.9"(0.35") definitely interesting times ahead. I am sure it won't take a lot to include a 1" sensor in some smart phone models.

There’s a photographer on Instagram going by @dr_brown that does some really impressive stuff with the P20

There is a local photographer Christian that has been amazed with the Hawei P20 Pro too

For me, cell phone photography will never be real until it supports studio strobes.

Cell photography is very real and in particular 4K videos. My wife this evening used her S8+ for product shots that were immediately uploaded for Instagram. I was surprised how well they came out with just led lighting.

I owe P10+, for six months already, and I used it more than 75% of the time (leaving my x-t2 in the hotel lock), on our last 7-day trip to Cuba, trying even some long low light exposures of the tripod.
Let's put it this way, you won't get what you get from real camera, but still, it's amazing what you can do with that small sensor, if you know how to use custom functions. Most of the people use it only as p&s camera.
I've seen only a few low end CanNikon cameras beside my x-t2, people use cell phones almost exclusively.
BTW, I played with P20 Pro in the local store, which made me to seriously re-think my overall system. That camera is simply amazing, considering it's only a cell phone.

Sadly those of us in the US are unable to use Huawei phones presently, due to our country’s idiotic trade wars. Sad trombone.

While it could be protecting Apple, etc. from competition, there are probably some legitimate concerns that there could be some issues with spying. I don’t think their phones are technically banned in the US (except for military bases and personnel who are definitely banned from using them.) Definitely the US government has worked to make anyone working with them uncomfortable.

Regardless the ideas they are implementing with their smartphone cameras will come to the other manufacturers as well.

I have heard great things about the P10 Pro. The difference with the P20 Pro is that the sensor 1/1.7" is 2.8 times larger in area so the difference is fast blurring the line with more serious cameras

You’ll love the D850. It’s like driving a BMW M5 after being used to a base 3 series - and like the analogy, both are great cameras but I find that in normal shooting the D750 is plenty most of the time.

Just for giggles, I did a little weight comparison between the new A73 versus the D750, both with battery grip, 85 f1.8 lens, and loaded with batteries. The actual weight difference was about 40 grams I recall correctly. Cured my gas for the A73 as a potential kit for my high volume headshot stuff, especially after shooting a 2 day gig in Vegas with the D750. For once the D850 was barely used aside from being used for behind the scene shots haha
