With the A7RIII, the focusing will be CDAF which is indeed very accurate and fast. The only issue is that it won't track moving subjects like PDAF. If someone wants to use the 100-400GM + 2x TC on moving subjects (like birds in flight), currently, I would recommend the A9 or A7III bodies since they can do PDAF at f/11.
Hi Fred,
I expect to place a bid for an a7rIII on Tuesday with Greentoe. My view on this situation is to use the A7rIII with the 1.4X extender when used with the FE 100-400mm lens (which I am saving for) for everything including BIF since the combination is only f8, I know it will not be as fast as the a9 or the a7III for a moving subject like BIF. But if I need more magnification to either crop the image somewhat or to set the camera to crop mode. If I decide to get the 2X extender I will use if for landscape or subjects not moving.
I will use this combination with my Leica R 280mm f4 Apo Telyt which I can use naked or with my Leica 1.4X or my Leica 2X apo extenders which I can also use for wildlife, landscape, and other subjects as long as I can get by if I can pre focus or focus quickly enough for the subject.

It's worth mentioning that the A7R3 with 100-400GM + 2x TC (f/11) will still lock-on and track a subject in CDAF. It uses contrast detection points (425 points) and therefore it's not as fast as using PDAF, but it could be a good option tracking slow moving subjects. It's curious that the A7R3 has more CDAF (425) than PDAF (399) points and the A7R2 in comparison has only 25 CDAF points.

Can you AF with 2x and r3 and 100-400?
Naturephoto yes you can especially with AF-S. With AF-C funny back-n-forth hunting.
But AF-S for sitting/perched bierds it worked a charm IN GOOD LIGHT. Might work in lesser
light but I had good light the day I experimented.. In fact in AF-S
the A7Riii + 2.0TC + 100-400GM was snappy to focus at varying distances.
I think that explains why I have had so many good results with BIF at the edges of the scene with the A7Riii. As long as the bird is not going towards or away from you, the focus point does not change very fast.

FWIW - I don't have the 2.0 x but the 100-400 + 1.4x on the A6500 is a great combo giving 24MP with an equivalent reach of 840mm. And it shoots at 11 FPS! Of course, it's not the A9 but either it its price!
I'll double up on your BIF (bee in flight) with my two BIF (butterflies in flight).
Not as detailed because they were about 20 feet away, but the A7Riii focused on them easily.
I agree. Crop sensors are great for small birds. The FZ battery, joystick and high pixel density are a must for me. BTW, great images.

Bob I NEED the a6500 just with the FZ battery, the joystick, and maybe 30mpx and Sony can
call it anything they'd like. I'm going with a7000
LDC I sold my a6500 two weeks ago anticipating. Just hope Sony doesn't make us wait too
long for the D500/7Diii killer.
I think it's ready, Sony just waiting for Canon to announce the 7Diii so they can deflate the sails/sales
I hope they're not waiting on Canon. I waited for years for a Canon mirrorless full frame and they dropped the ball there as for as I'm concerned.

' 100-400 is their only', only for 3ish more months.
And Sony often surprises. My recurring fantasy lately is that the 400/2.8 is released and along side it the 400/4 or 4.5.
Funny i an thinking of buying an a6300 and i am afraid they are waiting for me to buy it

I picked up the 2x last week and tried it out on the weekend. In continuous focus, it does a little "dance" back in forth before locking on, but other than being a little slow(cloudy conditions), it worked fine. The quality is excellent. I would never have believed a 2x on a zoom lens, especially a 100-400 could be so good. Amazing performance.
