Thanks Jeff,
due to a smashed D5 & 400/2.8 leaving them both out of action, my "prime" camera/lens by default became my 70-200 & D850, proving a very versatile 150-420 f/4 (with the 1.4tc) in DX crop mode.
Cheers
Marc
Marc, you rolled with the best of them. That is a very solid range and the lens did fantastic.
Seriously some images that I will strive to match one day.

Oh my, what images. And I love the panning shot and very creative crop showing only face through the carcass. Well done Marc. I am sure you must be very happy with your trip when it was so successful..

Ahh that is too bad to hear - was it damaged while traveling? I am seeing more and more wildlife photographers switching to a 400 2.8 for their big prime - in your experience in East Africa, do you find that you primarily have a TC on the 400 2.8 or are using it bare? I would be surprised that 400mm would typically be enough on a lower MP camera that doesn't offer DX crop mode.
Thanks,
Mark
My D5/400 combo was damaged chasing Lion chasing buffalo after we hit an Aardvark hole at some speed, flying out of my hands and over the hood of our Land Cruiser, all insured of course, very untimely, granted this was just 4 days into a month long assignment.
I love the 400E 2.8 and used in conjunction with the 1.4tc about 50% of the time, the D5's "modest" 21MP sensor does have a DX crop mode Jeff and occasionally use it.

Ouch!
But as they say... If your going to die, die with your boots on. And that she did!
Not that it's a good thing that you lost your rig like this, but wow! I can't think of any better way to loose my favorite rig then like that. Living the dream and in the heat of the action!
What a story to tell the kids eh!

Marc,
As I write this I’m on my way home from Zimbabwe, having visited Hwange and Mana Pools. Aside from the fact your images are fantastic (which they absolutely are), you’ve reminded me why I love the Serengetti plains so much as the available wildlife is so abundant compared to what I’ve just experienced. Fwiw, at this time of year wildlife is pretty sparse, especially in MP, although it truly is a special place as many have said.

Wow, wow, wow... wow,and wow ! These just kept getting better as I scrolled through them. Not much to say except these are probably the finest Safari images I've seen posted here.

You mention the Vumbi pride. I had heard that they were all killed by the Masai less than a year after the publication of Nick Nichols' Nat Geo article on the pride. Has another pride reclaimed the name, or did some members of the pride survive?
Many thanks for your positive comments dallvr.
Yes the Vumbi pride are (mostly) still doing very well and in fact as of just the other day number 29, ruled over by 6 pride males. For sure pride males from when Nick was there died, some from natural causes and others from territorial disputes, just like all other lion prides. So that "report" of all of them being killed by the Masai was total fabrication.........some would say complete BS.
Here are some very healthy Vumbi members from my recent March trip.

Marc, I enjoyed seeing this photos again, and so looked up your website, which I would commend to all the folks who also enjoyed seeing these images. https://www.marcmol.com
I am another safari addict and can appreciate the time and effort that goes into making these images and the eye that creates them. My most recent safari photos from Southern Africa are at http://www.wanderingeye.net/p1029134722
