Thanks for posting the samples Jeff. It looks pretty good. It would be interesting to see it side-by-side to the ZM 85.
Anyone wants to ship me a copy?

Great review and discussion on this often overlooked lens. I have the ZM 85/4 and also the FE 85/1.8. It's simple, the ZM is for landscape and the FE for portrait. I love the size of the ZM as it's so easy to throw in the bag. The FE is not really big but it's so much bigger than ZM

Since Steve's in Canada and I'm in California, it might be easier for me. So PM me if you want me to ship you mine. Or you could test both.

@DavidBM,
You wrote: "Distortion: Section to come, though I will give you a spoiler: not much!"

You got that right. that's actually one of the features of this lens. Almost no distortion.

Hi guys,

I am really enjoying the ZM but agree with the findings in this thread (e.g. light sources slightly outside of the frame etc.).

However, the thing which really annoys me is the lens hood when I pack the lens away. Since it can not be screwed onto the lens when reversed it always gets lost in the bag ...

Any good ideas to solve this? Do you use the lens hood or how do you store it away?

Here is a pano I did with the lens:

Florence is gorgeous. Beautiful capture!
The lens hood is not reversible, so I never really remove it. However, when I know I will be using it with my Seven5 filter system, I leave the hood at home or in the bag somewhere.

I use the lens hood reversed. I simply put a lens cap on that has a tether to an elastic band that goes around the base of the lens adapter. When you put the lens hood on reversed the tether cord gets in the way and allows the hood to be securely pushed on in reverse. I have a picture of my setup somewhere.

Can you post a picture of that? Sounds like it's an ingenious solution.

Yep, unfortunately the FM search of my uploads does not work well in my account, but here it is:
https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/ufiles/07/1357407.jpg

You can't see the lens cap, but it's on. First you put the tethered lens cap on then the hood over that. This stays on in the bag quite nicely.

FYI - I used a Leitax M to E mount that stays with the lens all the time - that's what the elastic band is wrapped around.

Also for reference, here are a few snaps of the 85/4 ZM next to the 85/1.8 Sony.
The ZM is, as it should be, considerably compact in diameter compared to the f/1.8 Sony.

Two summers ago I took the 85/ZM to France, Italy and Switzerland.
Last summer I took the 85/1.8 to Portugal and Spain.

Each has their merits.

Great review as usual.
I purchased this lens instead of the loxia 85 after reading Fred's posts and I'm glad I did. The lens is perfect for landscape: sharp, great contrast and fantastic handling (I much prefer the latter to the one of Loxia lenses).

In the last one I quite like the effect of veiling flare also described by David in its review
