p.1 #1 · Studio session with dancer using edgy lighting

Here's a few shots from a session with a talented high school dancer. When I put them against the black backdrop and flooring, I tend to go with edgy lighting. Comments welcome.

These are really well done. I am sure you had to take many shots to get the posing and lighting just how you wanted.

When I used to do studio modeling work, it would take *hours* to get a few posed shots with the lighting I wanted. Add in the dance and jumping elements and I think you knocked it out of the park... especially on (2) and (3).

*** On (1) if you just imagine the line of her back as the black leotard (removing the striped skin area), the image becomes much more svelte and pleasing.

Ron, these are just so well done. The lighting is really fine. I love the fact that you positioned the lights to accentuate her form and there are no residual reflections on the b.g. The last one has such great light isolation.
Flexibility is amazing for this young lady! Hopefully she tried out for the USA Gymnastics Team.
Again great work!
Dan

Lighting, Posing, and timing are all process, and very professional. Man, you're good! I recently shot a regional BB game in Algonquin.

Thanks! Did you shoot the games at Jacobs, or at Dundee-Crown? I shot, if I remember which one it is correctly, the regional finals at Dundee-Crown. Missed the semis when Dundee-Crown won in OT, I think, against St. Charles East.

I shoot for Rockford Jefferson. We lost to Elgin Larkin in the sectional final. I had it Wong, it was the sectional, not the regional. Nice place though.

I like the third the best with the second coming in a very close second. I find the lighting too strong in the first and last. The brightness of her leg in the first draws my eye away from her face and makes the pose feel awkward for me. She is a beautiful dancer and I love her red hair but I don't like the bright smoothness of her face against the contrasty colors. Seems somewhat harsh to me. The third feels nice and subtle to me. I like the way the lighting provides nice shadows balanced with small areas of brightness. Nice, relaxed expression and downward gaze. The angles of her pose in the second are perfect--so parallel.

These are wonderful to say the least. I just hope to get somewhere near these with my granddaughter dancer. Love you work Ron.
