p.1 #1 · Any reason to turn off anti-flicker?

I have a 5DIV. I understand the benefits of this feature in certain lighting conditions. Is there any reason to turn off this feature? Is it best to turn it off unless I need it? Are there any downsides to leaving it on all the time?

I leave it on. If the camera doesn't detect flickering lights, it doesn't do anything. You will get an anti-flicker symbol in the viewfinder if it activates.

It could slow down your fps, as the camera times the shutter release with the flickering. But I figure that is more likely to happen with a 12 fps 1Dx than the 7 fps 5DIV. I have never noticed this issue, including with my 10 fps 7DII.

I always leave it off, but I avoid unnatural lighting.

Thanks for the responses so far. I hadn't thought about fps, though I typically don't shoot for high frame rates. My first concern was whether it might affect the responsiveness of the shutter maybe. Maybe it took more time to "think" after pressing the button. That's all speculation on my part. The default setting for the camera is disabled.

I don't shoot action with any regularity. For my use, it's germane because one cannot use flicker detection and mirror lock-up simultaneously.

I leave flicker detection on at all times, unless I need mirror lock-up. In order to make the switch simple, add both settings to the custom tab at the end of the menu.

It would be great in a future firmware to see an additional custom function that's a binary toggle, meaning if you activate mirror lock-up the flicker detection turns off and vice versa. Currently it's two separate settings.

I had a 7D Mark II for a year. I used it a few times at the local ice rink to take shots of minor league hockey games. With anti-flicker on - the camera nailed the color, but the camera would miss shots (because of a tiny delay between my pressing the shutter button, and the shutter activating). When I turned anti-flicker off, the camera would respond instantaneously, but then I would have to fix up the the shot to fix the color etc.

I use MLU regularly, so maybe that's it. The 5D IV has numerous menu options.
