p.1 #1 · Do you usually record Fujifilm x-trans jpg or raw files?

Fujifilm markets the capability of its x-trans cameras to capture jpg files using a variety image styles that are applied in-camera. Speaking for yourself and based on your own photographic practice, do you typically set your camera to capture jpg-only, raw-only, or jpg+raw.

Feel free to add explanations for your typical preference in the follow-up comments. For example, if you use the jpg+raw setting, which file type do you usually work with?

It is understood that there are myriad variations on the three basic options, so please the one that corresponds with your typical setting choice that you usually use on your camera.

The way I shoot my Fujis personally might be a fourth option which is to shoot raw only but exclusively process in cam.

I like the Fuji JPEGs, but I also don't like to have two files for every single shot.

Essentially, I shoot raw and cull/process together at the same time with the in camera converter. This way, I can pick my keepers while tweaking them to get them exactly where I want them. For my shooting preferences, there really is no point to recording the JPEG exactly at the moment of capture when I can make the JPEG I want immediately after.

Needs to be one more option. I shoot about 80-90% raw, but when using the Fuji for family snapshots, etc., then switch to JPEG.

So far, the raw conversion software that I have is too clunky. Until I can integrate Fuji raw with my usual processing, I will take the Nikon when I can't take chances.

Note the word "usually" in the prompt.

When I shoot Canon FF I shoot RAW exclusively. I shoot JPEG + RAW with my Fuji X-E3.

I have several favorite custom settings defined for the X-E3. I found that a film simulation was just a starting point, there are many adjustments that can fine tune the look of the JPEG. Some of the custom settings for a particular simulation has to do with whether the light is flat or contrasty.

I use Fuji RAW as a "safety" image or to further manipulate under extreme conditions or if I want to pursue a particular look. I often use the RAW file for portraits, since they will inevitably end up in PS for some fairly extensive adjustments.

I use Fuji JPEGS for more casual images, such as travel and family photos. Many are usable SOOC or with just a small amount of adjustment, while occasionally I need to do more work.

I really like being able to share images wirelessly. On our last trip to Europe, I shared a number of images to family and social media by selecting images to download to my iPad.

Raw + Jpeg. Faster culling and I often shoot in monochrome, so I have the option to convert to color later.

I generally use the jpeg+Raw setting because I don't generate that many images. When I bought the X-100 I read a book on the Fuji X system by a german author who mentioned that the rear screen will provide a sharper image when viewing for sharpness with this setting. I use the burst mode plus RAW on my Nikon D500 when capturing bird images.

Raw only. Dont see the need for the jpeg since I already have the raw file. Just using up space in my cards for no reason. I dont ever share images as soon as I take them

Raw + JPG. I found that taking the raw and setting the film simulation in lightroom (usually provia or astia) I can with a few tweaks (usually double clicking on whites and blacks, bumping up detail, maybe a few others) get the picture looking better than the jpg pretty quickly. So though I wish I could just roll with the jpgs for the simplicity of it, I can't get myself to do it.

Raw + JPG. One of the reasons why I went Fuji was for the JPGs. I no longer shoot professionally but I do a lot of traveling and have friends on social media who have asked me to post more and share my adventures with them. I’ll shoot RAW to give me the option to work with the files later but I also shoot JPG because while not perfect all the time, they’re good enough to where I can make a few if any edits with my phone and share when needed within minutes. Makes it easy and fun to share my photos almost instantly while I’m off traveling the world for a few weeks.

Note, I also have an A7RII, A6300 and Leica Q. At this point the A7RII has pretty much delegated as my landscape camera and I’ll be selling the A6300 soon. The Q I love though and still will only carry that around with me on certain trips as my only camera unless I think I’ll need the weather sealing of the X-T2.

RAW only. I do a lot of low light shooting and like to have the best starting point for post processing.

Occasionally when on a trip my wife or a relative wants one or two shots I took. In these cases I convert in camera to a JPG and transfer this to my iPhone to share it. The advantage is I don't have to shoot RAW+JPG.

Since I started the thread, I suppose I should chime in, too.

I always shoot raw-only on my Fujifilm cameras. (First one was the XE1, the second is the XPro2.)

I want the highest quality original file that gives me the originally captured scene data and provides the greatest potential for work in post when necessary. If I need to get a different "look," I can do that in post. (I understand that some raw converters — Fujifilm's perhaps? — will apply those same simulations to raw files in post.)

I can see the potential usefulness of shooting raw+jpg in situations where you might want to quickly upload the jpg versions without post-processing, say to social media or to quickly share with friends. (I tend to just whip out the smart phone to take the picture for that sort of thing.)

To me the most important part about Fuji's JPEG engine is that I can alter my RAW files within the camera to create different JPEGs. For example, I shoot RAW only 100% of the time but very frequently perform basic edits in camera before I transfer to my phone to make final Lightroom Mobile edits. Maybe other platforms have this but I don't remember it when I was on Canon with the 6D. Don't think I could edit my CR2 until I got to a computer.

This is a great solution as you are still getting many of the benefits that a RAW converter would give you (shadow and highlight recovery, changing WB, changing camera color profiles, pushing full exposure, sharpening, noise reduction) but you get an (unfortunately) industry standard JPEG that is easy to transfer over WIFI, edit on mobile platforms, email, text, etc. I feel I get to keep most of the RAW IQ benefits but can retain mobile friendly, text friendly, email friendly etc. Good for impatient millennials like me and my friends

Even Lightroom on mobile can't edit RAW files, so JPEG has to do for mobile-only posts.

I shoot RAW + JPEG for a variety of reasons, and I mirror my SD cards for redundancy.

I don't personally do this so I may be incorrect, but I believe this hasn't been the case since like 2016. The downside is that you can not choose any camera calibrations (Provia, Velvia, Astia, etc. ).

The issue for me last time I looked into doing this was the camera calibration and actually getting the RAW files to Lightroom Mobile as they can't be transferred through Wifi. There are USB options of course.

Mirroring cards is a great idea for a bunch of reasons: A second copy in case you have a card problem, and the option to temporarily give up the second copies and switch the mode to let the other card provide more storage space.

I shoot RAW + JPEG. For the most part, the JPEGs are beautiful straight out of the camera. I use them for posting to the web. I find that I can make extensive modifications to the JPEGs without harming the image as long as I am only using the image for posting to web or sharing with family/friends.

If, however, I am going to print the image, which I frequently do, I process the RAW image so that I maintain maximum quality.

I'm new to the system (alternate to my Nikon D750). On Nikon, I shoot raw only. With Fuji, I'm shooting both now to learn more. I use LigthRoom CC and getting to the point where I can almost match the JPEG's from the raw. At some point, I'll drop the JPEGs. As few mentioned, there is no point in keeping both.
